Several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected across Southeast Michigan today and through this evening, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall and localized flooding. Periods of torrential rain could lead to isolated flash flooding, especially in urban areas, low-lying locations and other flood-prone spots. Drivers this evening should remain alert for water-covered roads and low visibility in downpours.
Heat and Humidity Surge Wednesday and Thursday
Attention is now turning to a significant warm-up expected during the middle of the week. Confidence continues to increase that hot and humid conditions will overspread Southeast Michigan on Wednesday and Thursday. Afternoon temperatures are expected to climb into the low 90s, while high humidity levels will push heat index values close to 100 degrees. People are encouraged to prepare now for the heat, particularly those who are sensitive to high temperatures, lack air conditioning or may not have access to adequate hydration. Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly when temperatures and humidity combine to create dangerous conditions. Adding to the discomfort, overnight temperatures will only fall to around 70 degrees, providing little relief and making it difficult for homes without air conditioning to cool down.
Severe Weather Possible Wednesday Night
A Marginal Risk for severe weather exists Wednesday night, generally between 8 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday, as thunderstorms move eastward from the Upper Midwest into Lower Michigan.
There remains some uncertainty regarding how well these storms will hold together as they approach Southeast Michigan. However, if they maintain their strength, they could produce damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail as large as one inch in diameter.
Higher Severe Weather Risk Thursday Night
The potential for severe thunderstorms appears to increase Thursday evening and overnight as a strong cold front sweeps across the region. All modes of severe weather will be on the table including damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall and isolated flooding. Additional details regarding the magnitude and timing of the threat will become clearer over the next couple of days. Because some storms may occur overnight, now is the time to ensure you have multiple ways to receive weather warnings, including methods that can wake you while sleeping.
