Over 100 victims expected to speak at sentencing

LANSING, Mich. – Over 100 victims are expected to appear and speak during the sentencing hearing for former gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar who has plead guilty to several counts of sexual abuse and assault.

Nassar has plead guilty to abusing young girls for decades. His main sentencing hearing started on Tuesday and is expected to last at least four days with nearly 100 victims speaking.

Whitney Burns met Nassar at age 15 after she and her family were involved in a head-on collision and they were referred to the famed doctor.

“Our family was so vulnerable at this time,” Burns said. “The power Larry Nassar held was given to him and we are here to take it away.”

Isabell Hutchins told the court about a box of gifts Nassar sent her from past Olympic events. She brought the box to court and read from the letters he sent her.

“Being only 10 years old, him being the most trusted doctor that all of my teammates saw, and having a friend say that she experienced the same thing, well I thought nothing of it,” Hutchins said. “

Natalie Woodland, 16, told the court that many of these abuses could have been prevented.

“To those people and organizations who let Nassar get away with these disgusting acts for so long, shame on you,” Woodland said. “People came to you crying out for help and you did nothing but turn them away, threaten them, and make them feel worse about their situation.”

Jillian Swinehart told the court that she questions the injuries Nassar diagnosed.

“I know that I should not feel ashamed of what happened to me because it was not my fault at all, it was yours,” Swinehart said. “All of this is your fault.”

Swinehart’s mother, addressed the court telling the court how the abuse affected her daughter and their family.

“I’ll never forget the day that she that Larry had done this to her,” Swinehart said. “It’s like your world collapses.”

Alison Chauvette said she didn’t follow her dreams of becoming a doctor because of Nassar.

“Spending that much time in the medical field, a palce that had caused me so much harm, would be unbearable,” Chauvette said.

Anna Dayton told Nassar that he wasted his life and his knowledge.

“I’m on the path of overcoming your manipulation and regaining my trust,” Dayton said. “

Mattie Larson told the court about the abuse gymnasts suffered at the Karolyi ranch during training camps.

“I had never felt so small and disposable in my entire life,” Larson said.

Arianna Castillo said she was 8 years old when she first began seeing Nassar.

“He helped Olympians that I looked up to when I was younger so I thought I couldn’t get better treatment anywhere else,” Castillo said.

Selena Brennan told Nassar that what goes around comes around, and he’ll likely become a patient in prison receiving one of his “special treatments.”

“I plan on taking your job Larry and making sure that no patient of mine ever feels the way I do,” Brennan said.

Brianne Randall lives in Seattle and only decided to leave her 7-week-old son to speak at the sentencing after hearing what other victims said. The Meridian Township Police Department flew her in to talk. She had reported Nassar to the police in 2004.

“I’m here to tell you that I wasn’t afraid of you then and I’m sure as hell not afraid of you now. Your power has been taken from you by an army of strong women," Randall said.

Makayla Thrush started seeing Nassar at a young age. She saw him weekly at his office, at the gym she trained at and in his basement.

“Dr. Larry crossed so many boundaries I didn’t believe I had at such a young age. You stole every little innocence I had out of me, out of a little girl who simply didn’t know what was going on.”

Emily Morales said she was in denial about what effect Nassar’s actions actually had on her. She has suffered with depression and anxiety but she blamed herself for it. She hadn’t read anything about the Nassar situation until last week, when she realized he hurt her.

“I didn’t know what he was doing, but for some reason I felt tense, afraid and exposed,” Morales said. “He was abusing his power as a doctor to use my body for his own sexual pleasure.”
