Off-duty Port Huron police officer killed in shooting; suspect arrested in Southfield

3 people shot inside apartment in St. Clair County

CLYDE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – An off-duty Port Huron police lieutenant was killed and two others were injured Friday morning in a shooting in St. Clair County's Clyde Township.

The shooting happened about 1 a.m. at an apartment building on Atkins Road near I-69 and Wadhams Road. Police said two people were shot inside an apartment, and a neighbor came to help but was also shot.

The neighbor who was shot exchanged gunfire with the other shooter, according to a witness. 

A suspect was arrested at a gas station in Southfield.

St. Clair County Undersheriff Tom Buckely said his department received a call about 12:52 a.m. about a shooting. 

"When the attack occurred the female was able to escape the residence, and she ran next door to the neighbor to try to get some assistance. When he came out, shots were exchanged and the neighbor who was out rendering help was hit," said Buckley. 

An investigation remains underway. 

Police have not said if the suspect knew the victims.
