Detroit police: Mother of 4-year-old says gunman shot child twice while trying to steal purse

‘We’re gonna get this person into custody,’ chief says

DETROIT – A 4-year-old was rushed to a hospital after being shot in the arm and in the leg on Detroit’s east side, according to police.

The child is in critical condition. The child’s mother is OK and at the hospital with her child. Their home is now an active crime scene.

Police said the shooting happened around 3 p.m. Friday in the 6500 block of Brush Street. That’s in the area of Milwaukee Avenue and East Grand Boulevard.

Police said the mother told them someone tried to steal her purse and shot her child during the incident. She said the suspect was driving a brown or tan F-150 truck.

“Regardless of how the story comes together, the bottom line is we got a 4-year-old baby that’s shot at this house. We’re gonna put all our efforts in to getting the person who shot him. Believe it. Our officers are gonna work this case and we’re gonna get this person into custody,” Detroit police Chief James White said.

Police said the shooting was reported from the hospital and the crime scene is inside the building.
