Vacant church collapses on Detroit’s west side; no injuries reported

Officials expect to have everything cleaned up by 12 p.m. Tuesday

DETROIT – A vacant church has collapsed on Detroit’s west side.

The Detroit Fire Department said the church collapsed Monday (Oct. 9) around 9 p.m. onto the 7000 Fenkell Avenue between Monica Street and Santa Rosa Drive.

Officials say no one was inside or nearby, so there were no injuries.

DTE was on the scene to cut off the gas line as a precaution.

Officials expect to have everything cleaned up by 12 p.m. Tuesday. They are asking people to stay away in the meantime so they can get the area cleaned up.

Detroit Fire Department Chief James Harris says they’re fortunate that no one was hurt and that it happened at night.

It is too soon to tell what caused the collapse of the vacant church, but officials said the owner was preparing for renovations.

This is a breaking news story, and updates will be posted as they become available.
