Wayne-Westland Community Schools vote down proposed layoffs

District’s school board voted unanimously

WESTLAND, Mich. – Wayne-Westland Community Schools hit the brakes on proposed layoffs.

The district’s school board voted unanimously on Thursday (Dec. 21) not to go through with cutting 20 jobs in response to a budget shortfall.

“I absolutely am relieved, but still concerned about where the money is going to come from,” said teacher Erin Held.

Parents, teachers, and community members packed the room for Thursday’s special board meeting.

The crowd demanded accountability for the millions of dollars mismanaged by the district.

“I still find it hard to believe a full department with multiple checks and balances failed to catch a multi-million-dollar mistake,” one person said during public comment.

While the 20 jobs are safe for now, the board still needs to come up with a solution to its financial situation.
