Man who prompted Detroit Amber Alert by stealing car with child inside still at large

3-year-old found wandering streets hours later

DETROIT – The man who triggered an Amber Alert over the weekend by stealing a car with a child in the back seat from a Detroit gas station was still at large on Monday.

Detroit police were asking the public to help identify a man who stole a car from a gas station in the area of Greenfield and Schoolcraft roads early on Saturday, Feb. 24. A 3-year-old girl was in the back seat of the car when it was stolen.

An Amber Alert was issued for the young girl at around 2:30 that morning.

Surveillance video shows the man, dressed in gray, hopping into a vehicle parked near the gas station entrance. The man drove off as someone ran outside and attempted to open the door to the driver’s seat.

The Amber Alert was cancelled later Saturday morning. Police said the child was found wandering the streets about three hours after the alert was issued. The child was identified as “safe,” and they did not appear to be hurt.

The stolen car was later found in the area of Joy and Evergreen roads, officials said, not far from the site of the theft. The man who was driving the car was still at large, however, as of Monday, Feb. 26.

Authorities were asking anyone with information to contact Detroit police, or anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up.
