21-year-old man convicted of second degree murder in death of Frenchtown Township woman

Body of Kayla Sedoskey was found at an abandoned building with 3 gunshot wounds

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – Brian David Westley Smith, 21, has been convicted with second degree murder in connection with the death of Kayla Sedoskey of Frenchtown Township.

Officials say the body of Sedoskey, 23, was found at an abandoned Boysville Juvenile Facility on March 2, 2023 with three gunshot wounds.

Court documents say the Monroe County man entered a no contest plea to the murder charge on Tuesday (April 2) and the parties involved agreed to a factual basis for the court to be able to accept his plea.

The plea deal revealed that Smith lured the Frenchtown Township to the abandoned facility under the guise that they would spend time alone, but when they arrived, Sedoskey was attacked by her killers.

One of the men involved was Steven Bails, 45, who was convicted by a jury of first-degree homicide and conspiracy to commit homicide on Thursday, March 21, 2024.

Additional terms of Smith’s plea includes a mandatory minimum sentence of 40 years in prison.

Officials say six people including Smith and Bails were arrested in connection with the murder.

  • Narena Bails and Sierra Bemis pleaded guilty to second-degree homicide.
  • Alexander Feko pleaded guilty to tampering with evidence and three counts of accessory to homicide after the fact.
  • Kaylyn Ramse are awaiting trial on charges of first-degree homicide and conspiracy to commit homicide.
