Trenton man killed in motorcycle crash on I-75 in Erie Township

Speed, alcohol believed to be factors in crash

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on I-75 in Erie Township on Saturday night, according to officials.

The crash happened at 9:35 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024, on northbound I-75, north of Bay Creek Road in Erie Township.

Officials said Christopher L. Taylor, 49, of Trenton was driving a black 2023 Harley Davidson Street Glide motorcycle northbound on I-75 in the center travel lane when he was side-swiped by a 55-year-old driver from Toledo, Ohio.

The Toledo man was driving a white 2005 Chevrolet Malibu. Investigators said witnesses reported that the Toledo man was speeding in the right northbound lane when he merged into the middle lane and struck Taylor’s motorcycle.

The Chevrolet traveled off the freeway to the west, struck the median concrete barrier wall, and then reentered the freeway, coming to a stop in the center travel lane and facing east.

Taylor fell off the motorcycle and came to rest against the median concrete barrier wall. The motorcycle slid on the freeway past Taylor, struck a median barrier wall, and came to rest on its left side on the inside shoulder of I-75 facing east. Taylor was wearing a helmet.

Taylor was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Toledo driver was not injured in the crash.

The Toledo driver was arrested under suspicion of operating while intoxicated. He is being held in the Monroe County Jail. His identity will not be released until he is arraigned.

The crash is still under investigation by by Lieutenant Brian Quinn and Deputy Sheriffs Alec Preadmore and Steven Warren of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7541.
