Canton man sentenced to 6-15 years for crash that killed 2 children and their grandmother

DETROIT – A 41-year-old Canton man has been sentenced to 6-15 years in prison for his role in a crash that killed two children and their grandmother last summer.

Prosecutors say that Amir Khalid, 41, was driving recklessly at high speeds in the area of Gratiot Avenue and August Street in Detroit when he struck the victims’ vehicle, killing 8-year-old Savannah Allen and her 15-year-old sister Syiana Allen. The grandmother, who was not identified by police, was critically injured in the crash and later died from her injuries. Another child was also seriously injured.

A jury found Khalid guilty last month of three counts of reckless driving causing death, one count of reckless driving causing serious impairment, and one count of drag racing. He was found not guilty on three counts of second-degree murder issued by prosecutors.

Khalid received a credit for time served of 266 days and will serve his sentences for the five charges concurrently.
