Juneteenth National Independence Day is fast approaching, and many Metro Detroit neighborhoods are gearing up to hold special events and promotions to commemorate the federal holiday.
Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth celebrates the date of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, freeing the last of America’s slaves from defiant slaveholders. Juneteenth became a federally recognized national holiday in 2021.
