DETROIT – A young man is in critical condition after being shot by police following an encounter involving an assault-style rifle in downtown Detroit.

Police said they do not believe there is an ongoing threat to the public.

The incident occurred on Monday (June 22) when police said an officer spotted the individual carrying the rifle, and police approached him.

At some point during the encounter, police said an officer fired their weapon, striking the man.

Officials said the individual was transported to a Metro Detroit hospital for treatment and remains in critical condition.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and emphasized that their priority is ensuring the community’s safety and the safe return of teens and young people home.
