DETROIT – A 19-year-old man was hospitalized after being shot multiple times by a police officer during a foot pursuit in downtown Detroit following an investigation.

The incident occurred on Monday (June 22) in the area of Farmer and Bates streets.

Police said officers arrested a 19-year-old individual at approximately 6:24 p.m. after determining the person was armed with a weapon.

During the arrest, police said another individual who had been with the group began walking away from the area.

Officers said they then observed that the individual was armed and attempted to take the person into custody.

Police said the suspect fled on foot, prompting officers to pursue the suspect.

During the chase, police said an officer fired shots from a department-issued handgun after fearing for his safety and the safety of the public.

Police said the suspect was struck multiple times and was transported to a Metro Detroit hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

Officials did not immediately release information about the suspect’s condition.

A weapon was recovered at the scene.

Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The incident remains under investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
