SOUTHGATE, Mich. – One man shot and killed by a Southgate officer after pulling out a sharp object and advancing.
Southgate Officers were dispatched to a the Meijer located on 16300 Fort St. at around 4 p.m. on June 27 for an alleged retail theft.

Authorities say when officers arrived, alleged suspects, a 34-year-old man and 42-year old woman were in the west portion of the parking lot.
According to police, the officers were attempting to investigate the theft when the man pulled out a sharp object and advanced toward the them.
Investigation says one officer fired at least one round, striking the man.

According to police, the officers performed life saving measures before the man was transported to a local hospital.
The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police say the woman was taken into custody without further incident and no officers were hurt during the altercation.
The investigation has been turned over to the Michigan State Police.
The officer involved will be placed on administrate leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
