In total, this affects about 1 million Michigan children. “We kind of assumed this was impacting more kids, but we didn’t know,” said Michigan Association of United Ways President and CEO Mike Larson. Most jobs pay less than $20 an hour in Michigan, according to the Michigan Association of United Ways, but a family of four needs to earn $32 an hour to afford basic needs. And last fall, four of ten Michigan ALICE families reported they could not afford enough food to feed their children. Legislation introduced last year would boost the Earned Income Tax Credit from to an average of $749 for about 740,000 Michigan families.

JACKSON COUNTY, MI — Two in five Jackson County households do not earn enough to be considered financially stable, a recent report states. The local results are a slight improvement from the 2019 report, which found 42% of households did not meet the threshold, according to the report. But, the share of households in poverty rose slightly, from 13% to 16%, and the share of ALICE households decreased from 29% to 25%. The statewide median household income was $59,584, whereas the median household income in Jackson County was $55,124, according to the report. United Way of Jackson County committed to investing $480,000 in 24 local initiatives in 2020, officials said.

KALAMAZOO — Of the more than 103,000 households in Kalamazoo County, 39% were not earning enough to be considered financially stable prior to the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, a recent report states. Backing up to 2019, 38% of Michiganders and 39% of Kalamazoo County residents found themselves living beneath the ALICE threshold. The statewide median household income was $59,584, whereas the median household income in Kalamazoo County was $56,441. Statewide, white households saw a 4% drop in those falling below the ALICE Threshold, while Black households (4%), Hispanic households (25%) and Asian households (41%) all saw major increases. Sixty percent of Black households, 48% of Hispanic households and 73% of single female-led households were living below the ALICE threshold statewide.

(CNN) - A college student made the discovery of a lifetime on a recent paleontology dig when he unearthed a partial Triceratops skull. Harrison Duran, a fifth-year biology student at the University of California, Merced, uncovered the 65 million-year-old skull in the badlands of North Dakota. "I can't quite express my excitement in that moment when we uncovered the skull," Duran said in a news release from the school on Wednesday. Last year, he found another Triceratops skull around the same area that is currently being excavated.
