Chef rolls out Afro-Caribbean twist on paczki
March 1st marks Fat Tuesday! For many, that means Paczki Day, or a day to fill up on the jelly or cream filled pastries. However, there’s a spot in Detroit that’s serving up a twist on the tradition. Yum Village Marketplace and Pantry is offering Afro-Caribbean inspired paczki flavors.

There’s a way to make real, traditional paczkis, said Jarrid of Barney’s BakeHouse Bakery in Bay City. “The traditional paczki is made with a dense sweet dough. Weighman set up shop at the former Barney’s Bakery at 421 S. Van Buren St. in the fall of 2020 after the historic and original Barney’s Bakery, which dated back to 1929, announced it was closing its doors earlier that year. The paczki is rooted in Polish tradition, which is something that Bay City is rich in. We had 514 customer transactions on the snowiest day of the year last Paczki’s Day.

JACKSON, MI – It was once crowded with students, large celebrations and people baking paczki for Fat Tuesday, but the St. Joseph Catholic School building will be no more this summer. The building also was a social center, with its basement hosting festivals, weddings, birthdays, funerals and more. She even remembers hosting her mother’s 100th birthday inside the social center. Since the demolition will leave the St. Joe campus without a social center, the parish is working to find a new space for festivals, gatherings and other events. One possibility is the renovation of an old office area between the church and the former rectory at 705 Waterloo St., Canoy said.

Second person killed by Mardi Gras float in New Orleans
A man was struck and killed by a Mardi Gras float during a raucous weekend street parade in New Orleans, becoming the second person in days killed along a parade route during this years Carnival season, authorities said. The fatality came as New Orleans was mourning the death of a 58-year-old woman who witnesses said was run over by a parade float Wednesday night. Tandem floats, similar to the one involved in Saturdays incident, are multiple floats connected together and pulled by one tractor. Tandem floats would not be allowed for the few days remaining in the 2020 festival season, city agency NOLA Ready tweeted.
