Michigan’s commitment drought ends with pledge from TE Deakon Tonielli

Michigan’s commitment drought is over following its most important recruiting weekend of the summer. 2023 three-star tight end Deakon Tonielli was one of double-digit official visitors for “Victor’s Weekend” and announced his verbal pledge to the Wolverines on Sunday. “BOOM!” Tonielli wrote in a tweet. Will grow into a tight end in college but his experience being unattached offers a lot of possibilities. The Wolverines did have a verbal pledge from a tight end in the 2023 class, but four-star Andrew Rappleyea decommitted in April.

Michigan X factor: TE Erick All ‘wants to kill everything’

Not only did he catch the football, but he darted up field more than 40 yards for a touchdown, outrunning everyone after him. “I mean, he was two weeks off a high-ankle sprain and he was doing that,” Michigan tight ends coach Grant Newsome, a graduate assistant coach at the time, recently recalled. It was offensive line coach (formerly in charge of the tight ends) Sherrone Moore who just a couple of years ago set the expectation high for the Fairfield, Ohio, native. “We have to try and pull him back sometimes, because he just wants to kill everything,” Newsome said. While it wasn’t some astronomical number in terms of production, Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan teams have shown a willingness to utilize the tight ends.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Grant Newsome still caries a limp from that tragic day in 2016, one that bucked grand visions the former Michigan offensive lineman once had. More: Michigan football sets date for spring game; practice begins today“Sherrone is going to be, really, dedicated to still coaching the offensive line, which is a huge undertaking,” Harbaugh said. “The fortunate thing is, we’ve got Sherrone Moore, Matt Weiss, Mike Hart, Ron Bellamy — and adding Grant Newsome, who was also here last year,” Harbaugh said.
