‘The Crown,’ ‘Ted Lasso,’ ‘Queen’s Gambit’ top 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Netflix’s “The Crown” and “The Queen’s Gambit” combined with Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” to win top series honors at the Sunday’s Emmy Awards, a first for streaming services that cemented their rise to prominence in the television industry. Gillian Anderson and Tobias Menzies of British royal drama “The Crown” were honored for their supporting performances. That includes Netflix’s drama “The Crown” and Apple TV+ comedy “Ted Lasso.” Each is considered a frontrunner Sunday for top series honors in their respective categories, and their casts received armloads of nominations. Victories in both the best drama and comedy series categories would mark a first for streaming services and reinforce their growing dominance, to the dismay of competitors. The top nominees include the British royal drama “The Crown” and the Star Wars-universe derived “The Mandalorian,” which received a leading 24 nominations each.

Last year's show, in the pre-lockdown era, reached 18.4 million viewers, the Nielsen company said. The Academy Awards in 2020 reached a record low 23.6 million viewers, and that was also pre-lockdown. ABC had 3.9 million, NBC had 3.4 million, Fox had 2.3 million, Univision had 1.4 million, Ion Television had 1.2 million and Telemundo had 1 million. What were the Hollywood fashion hit or misses at the Golden Globes?

While some people tune into the Golden Globe Awards to see what the best movies and shows are they should watch, many also tune in to see what everyone is wearing. This week on What’s the Buzz, Local 4 Style Editor Jon Jordan and The Michigan Chronical Editor AJ Williams gave their takes on the fashion hits and misses of the big night. Some looks they agreed on, like how actress/director Regina King sparkled in her one-shoulder black and silver dress. Both AJ and Jon had things to say about last night’s winner Jason Sudeikis’ tie-dye hoodie and Tina Fey’s unforgettable/forgettable dresses. Watch the video above to hear what Jon and AJ had to say about the fashion choices at the Golden Globes.

Golden Globe 2021 red carpet fashion: Best looks from the nontraditional virtual show

It was hosted by Tina Fey at New York City's Rainbow Room and Amy Poehler at the Beverly Hilton, while nominees were encouraged to stay home. Stars presented in person in front of a small audience of essential workers. Most nominees opted to glam up at home and post on their social media accounts. And then there was Jason Sudeikis, who accepted the award for "Ted Lasso" in a hoodie.

With loved ones and pets, Globes winners embrace cozier show

Instead, most of Sunday night’s winners accepted from their own homes or hotel rooms in laidback settings unheard of for Hollywood's biggest awards shows. Friends watching on television downstairs raised a delayed shout when she was announced as the winner for supporting actress in a motion picture drama. “It was really fun,” said Aaron Sorkin, winner for motion picture screenplay. Their daughters, Sunday and Faith, both wore white dresses while making a rare appearance. Known for her singing career, Day became the second Black woman to win for actress in a motion picture drama in her acting debut.

Even more chaotic than usual, Globes still had their moments

(NBC via AP)In the opening moments of a Golden Globes night even more chaotic and confounding than usual, co-host Tina Fey raised a theoretical question: “Could this whole night have been an email?” Only the next three hours would tell. Or Chloé Zhao, making history as the first woman of Asian descent to win best director (and the first woman since 1984.) AdOf course, there were the usual confounding results and baffling snubs, compounded here by some epic Zoom fails. ZHAO MAKES HISTORYWhen Zhao won best director for her haunting and elegant “Nomadland,” she was the first woman of Asian descent to win that award. It was updated on March 3, 2021, to correct the nationality of director of “Nomadland.” Chloe Zhao is Chinese, not Asian American.

The glam was back at the Golden Globes, albeit at a distance

And they were ready, style wise, as the Globes split hosts, with Amy Poehler at the Beverly Hilton and Tina Fey at the Rainbow Room in New York. Backstage after the show, Sudeikis told reporters he owns a multitude of hoodies but chose the one emblazoned with “Forward” on the front and “Listen + Lead” on the back as fitting for the unusual night. “I wanted to feel festive and go for it,” she told NBC. Sarah Paulson held her little black pooch on screen and Emma Corrin's fluffy white cat grabbed a moment for itself. AdLydia Marks, a New York set decorator, told The Associated Press the evening's technical challenges were many.

Netflix once again dominates Golden Globe TV nominations

(Liam Daniel/Netflix via AP)NEW YORK – Netflix rode the voracious hunger for TV content during a year of pandemic viewership to a dominant showing at the Golden Globe nominations. The streaming giant scooped up 20 small-screen nods — nearly three times as many as its closest competitor, HBO, and beating the 17 TV nominations it got last year. Streaming newcomer HBO Max scored two nominations with “The Flight Attendant,” a best comedy TV berth and also earned “The Big Bang Theory” veteran Kaley Cuoco her first Globe nod. Little-known Pop TV earned five nominations — all for the Canadian comedy “Schitt’s Creek,” which swept the comedy Emmy Awards last year. Ad“The Great” now faces “The Flight Attendant,” “Schitt’s Creek,” “Emily in Paris” and “Ted Lasso” for bragging rights to best comedy TV series.
