Lake Michigan shipwreck fragment emerges on Leelanau coast

LELAND, MI โ€” Shifting sandbars along the Leelanau County coast have uncovered a piece of wreckage which a northern Michigan diver believes is the remains of a schooner that sank in the treacherous Manitou Passage 150 years ago. Beach sand accretion and erosion, wind, waves and changing water levels are known for periodically re-surfacing shipwrecks along the Lake Michigan coast. A clock made from the shipwreck was auctioned in October to raise money for St. Judeโ€™s Childrenโ€™s Research Hospital. โ€œThereโ€™s never been anything else on that shoreline in that same spot,โ€ said Roxburgh, referencing a 1991 Manitou Passage maritime inventory book. The Manitou Passage is an underwater preserve and control over wrecks is governed as if they were in a museum.
