MATT WEISS

Sherrone Moore, Jesse Minter are Michigan football’s highest-paid assistants

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jim Harbaugh’s assistant coaches at Michigan all received new contracts with pay raises in recent months, making Sherrone Moore and first-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter the highest-paid on staff. Weiss, meanwhile, signed a new three-year contract on Feb. 24 that boosted his pay from $600,000 to $850,000 per year, with identical performance bonuses. The duo have a tall task ahead of them following the abrupt departure of Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, whose pay topped $1 million annually. • Running backs coach Mike Hart signed a new two-year contract on Feb. 22 that will pay him $550,000, up from the $430,000 in 2021. Michigan is coming off a successful 2021 season in which it finished 12-2, won the Big Ten championship and earned a College Football Playoff berth.

New co-OCs eager to make Michigan football’s offense ‘best it’s ever been’

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jim Harbaugh has preached collaboration among his coaches for years now at Michigan, and the 2022 season is going to be no different on offense. This year, Moore — who earned the co-coordinator title last year, but didn’t call any plays — will tag team everything with Weiss, Michigan’s quarterbacks coach, to help revamp the Wolverines’ offense. “Just because we know each other,” said Moore, Michigan’s offensive line coach, told reporters last Wednesday. “When you watch the tape, the first thing that you’d say is, ‘Wow, that is a great offense,’” Weiss said. “We set records and for Michigan, it was a historically great offense.

Michigan hopeful to have QB J.J. McCarthy throwing by fall camp

As Michigan’s football team nears the half-way mark of spring practice, there’s a growing belief that McCarthy — limited with an undisclosed injury to his right throwing shoulder — will be full-go by the time fall camp kicks off in early August. He’s rehabbing, he’s doing what he’s supposed to do,” quarterbacks coach and recently promoted co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss told reporters on Wednesday. “Which is the smart thing to do, to make sure a small problem doesn’t become a big problem,” Weiss said. “He’s in team drills — full team drills at times. However, Weiss said, there’s a belief that McCarthy could be back in a full-time capacity, throwing and all, by the start of fall camp.

Jim Harbaugh reveals duties for Michigan’s new offensive coordinators

For the first time in the Jim Harbaugh era, Michigan plans to enter a season with two coaches in charge of the play calling. The role of offensive coordinator has been murky in previous years. “Co-coordinators, and we’re going to split the play-calling duties,” Harbaugh said last week on the “In the Trenches” podcast, confirming his plan unveiled earlier this month. More: Michigan football sets date for spring game; practice begins today“Sherrone is going to be, really, dedicated to still coaching the offensive line, which is a huge undertaking,” Harbaugh said. “The fortunate thing is, we’ve got Sherrone Moore, Matt Weiss, Mike Hart, Ron Bellamy — and adding Grant Newsome, who was also here last year,” Harbaugh said.

Cade McNamara’s start: The good, the bad and outside factors impacting the Michigan QB

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — It’s not easy being the quarterback at Michigan, even on a 4-0 team. And at the end of the day, converting drives into touchdowns and winning football games are all that matters. He’s averaging 10.1 yards per attempt, a figure that ranks Michigan 11th in the country in that category. More: Why Michigan football isn’t rushing J.J. McCarthy’s development*******Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh and quarterback Cade McNamara (12) head to the end zone for warm-ups before their college football game against Western Michigan at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, on Saturday, September 4, 2021. “When we’re in those scenarios when we kind of have to throw our way back into a game,” McNamara said this week, “I’m more than capable of doing that.

Michigan already has a quarterback commit in the 2022 class, but it might not be done adding at the position. He said he talks with either Michigan director of player personnel Courtney Morgan or quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss almost every day. He also took a visit to Ole Miss last week and is scheduled to visit UCLA on Oct. 23. They rotated at quarterback (against Western Michigan and Northern Illinois), so I thought that was a good thing. Michigan QBs coach on Cade McNamara: ‘He’s our starter’

If there was any doubt about where things stand at quarterback for Michigan, its first-year coach in charge of the position crystalized it this week. Matt Weiss, in an interview on the “In the Trenches” podcast, referred to junior quarterback Cade McNamara as the Wolverines’ clear-cut No. Michigan just wrapped up its 15-practice spring schedule last weekend, which culminated with a closed-to-the-public spring game in Ann Arbor in which McNamara was named game MVP. Milton has since elected to transfer out of Michigan, leaving the 6-foot-1, 205-pound McNamara as the only quarterback on the roster with any college experience. is a highly-talented guy,” Weiss said.

Michigan’s new QBs coach now fourth highest-paid assistant on staff

Michigan’s new quarterbacks coach will be the fourth highest-paid assistant on Jim Harbaugh’s staff in 2021. That makes him fourth on the staff in annual base pay, behind only defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald ($1 million), offensive coordinator Josh Gattis ($900,000) and co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Maurice Linguist ($680,000). Michigan’s previous quarterbacks coach, Ben McDaniels, who was not retained, collected a $400,000 base salary in 2020. To make room for Weiss, Harbaugh reconfigured his already announced staff -- moving recently hired assistant Ron Bellamy from receivers to safeties, and recently hired assistant George Helow from safeties to linebackers. “But also hire coach Weiss, who I know really good.

Jim Harbaugh explains Matt Weiss hire, late reconfiguration of Michigan staff

The original plan, Jim Harbaugh says, was for Ron Bellamy to coach the safeties when he came aboard the Michigan coaching staff in January. But also for Harbaugh to hire Matt Weiss, a familiar face who’s spent the last 12 years working his way up the Baltimore Ravens’ coaching staff — from quality-control coach to coaching the linebackers, cornerbacks and, most recently, the running backs. “Like I did throughout the entire process, I was looking at what coaches would be the best fit for us (and) best coach available,” Harbaugh told reporters Thursday. “That was the opportunity to hire Matt Weiss. “But that was the way I could configure it but also hire coach Weiss, who I know really good.

Michigan football adds Matt Weiss amid another staff shakeup

Michigan football has officially added Matt Weiss, but Jim Harbaugh is having to shift roles on his coaching staff to make room. Weiss will coach the team’s quarterbacks, as was reported on Sunday — but the hire has set off a domino effect with two other assistants. “I look forward to reuniting with coach Jim Harbaugh, learning our offensive system, and building relationships with the staff and student-athletes,” Weiss said in a statement. Last month, after Harbaugh thought he finalized his coaching staff for the 2021 season, the plan was for him to take reins of the quarterbacks. Weiss, who spent the last 12 seasons in the NFL, will also have to dive right in.
