Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan assistants earned over $2M in bonuses for 2022 season
Jim Harbaugh’s group of assistant coaches cashed in on nearly $2.5 million in contract bonuses following the 2022 season, one that saw Michigan repeat as Big Ten champions and return to the College Football Playoff. Michigan offensive coordinators Matt Weiss and Sherrone Moore earned the most, each collecting $525,000 in bonus payouts to supplement their already lucrative salaries. Moore and Weiss both earned promotions before the 2022 season, both in their responsibilities (play-calling) and pay (Moore earned a $900,000 salary, while Weiss made $850,000). Minter, whose base salary was $900,000, missed out on an additional $100,000 after Michigan’s scoring defense finished third in the Big Ten. Add all that up (it’s a lot, we know) and Michigan was set to pay out $2,475,000 in bonus payouts and incentives following another successful season.

mlive.comReport: Chris Partridge returning to Michigan football coaching staff
Jim Harbaugh is reportedly not done making changes to his coaching staff, and this one involves the return of a familiar face. Chris Partridge, who spent five seasons at Michigan before departing in 2020 to become co-defensive coordinator at Ole Miss, is expected to be hired as an assistant coach, On3′s Matt Zenitz reports. Partridge, 42, spent the last three years coaching safeties and helping coordinate the Ole Miss defense. He abruptly left for Ole Miss following the 2019 season, for a zero-dollar pay raise and co-coordinator role alongside D.J. Michigan is coming off a 13-1 season, its best yet under Harbaugh, that saw the team beat rivals Michigan State and Ohio State, win a second straight Big Ten title and reach the College Football Playoff.

mlive.comAP source: Michigan's Harbaugh refuses to agree on charge
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh told NCAA investigators in multiple meetings this week that he will not agree to an unethical conduct charge, according to a person familiar with the situation. Michigan announced two weeks ago that it received a notice of allegations from the NCAA that the governing body is looking into potential rules infractions within the football program. The investigation involves impermissible texts and calls — including some by Harbaugh — to high school prospects during part of a pandemic-related dead period for contact with potential recruits.
news.yahoo.comMichigan assistant Matt Weiss placed on leave amid report of police probe
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — A cloudy offseason just got a bit more dramatic, with the Michigan football program placing co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss on paid leave as police probe the offices at Schembechler Hall, MLive has learned. Weiss, 39, is believed to be the subject of an investigation into a report of “computer access crimes,” ESPN reports. “Matt Weiss is on leave,” team spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed Tuesday night. Before his time at Michigan, Weiss spent 12 years on the staff of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, rising from the ranks of low-level assistant to position coach. Just yesterday, Harbaugh, whose own future at Michigan was cloudy amid NFL interest, said he would return to the sidelines in 2023.

“We’ve got to get better in the red zone,” running back Blake Corum said. Once reaching the red zone -- the opponent’s 20-yard line -- Michigan is scoring a touchdown 63.6 percent of the time, a rate that ranks 58th in FBS. Michigan got all the way inside the Michigan State 10-yard line four times this past Saturday and scored two touchdowns. “It’s harder to move the ball in general (in the red zone),” he said. The Michigan offense has not been very good at this so far, especially on deep passes.
mlive.comFour Iowa players Michigan football should worry (or at least know) about
Iowa doesn’t always have a bunch of superstars, but they hard and smart and work well together. That’s especially true against Iowa, and Taylor’s performance will help determine which team wins that battle. He makes this list because he’ll need a career game for Iowa to pull off the upset. Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz defended Petras earlier this week, saying that the entire offense has been out of sync. Iowa doesn’t have a star running back, so Petras will have to shoulder the load if the Hawkeyes are going to score enough to hang with Michigan.
mlive.comMichigan QB J.J. McCarthy had an unusual request to help fix fumbles
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — J.J. McCarthy was the first one to admit his play last Saturday wasn’t the best. Among them were the two fumbles he accounted for, both recovered by the Michigan offense, averting disaster that could have swung the Wolverines’ 34-27 victory over Maryland. So, how did McCarthy respond this week in practice? “Classic J.J.,” quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss, who doubles as Michigan’s co-offensive coordinator, told reporters on Wednesday. “It’s really hard with quarterbacks, just because they don’t get the contact in practice that other guys do.

The Big Ten’s first female football coach gives Michigan Wolverines a fresh perspective
Michigan football, in every sense, is a step up from Georgetown. She needed a push, and it led to phone conversations with Harbaugh in which he learned more about her work with Georgetown football. “I have always believed in providing opportunities for individuals who are passionate about football and Mimi is someone who has shown that drive to become a football coach,” Harbaugh said in a statement at the time. In fact, little brother has flipped it, calling her “Coach Bolden-Morris” is in a faux serious voice now and then. I think she’s in the right profession.”“She’s asking questions but also making suggestions,” said Moore, co-offensive coordinator.
mlive.comMichigan football’s play-calling duo finds rhythm during easy start
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — If there was ever a year for Michigan football to debut first-time play callers, this was it. “Play calling’s been good, play calling’s been smooth, play calling’s been great,” Moore told reporters on Wednesday. “We always think there’s things to improve, but the (lack of) pre-snap penalties are really on the players,” Moore said. He’s helped bring all of that to Michigan, while Moore remains focused on bringing a balanced approach to Saturdays. We’ll use analytics during a game, we’ll use it during game-planning, and we’ll use it during a game in certain situations.
mlive.comAgent paying for meals, calling recruits too early among Michigan’s recent NCAA violations
These were among the handful of NCAA violations Michigan’s football and men’s basketball programs committed over a recent one-year period. ***In July of 2021, six Michigan basketball players -- four men and two women -- had a meal with an agent. ***While the student-athlete’s excuse was understandable in that instance, a separate violation involved Michigan’s recruiting director, who should certainly know better. And yet Courtney Morgan directed Michigan football coaches to contact recruits before they were allowed to do so. Michigan’s director of on-campus recruiting, Christina DeRuyter, who’d been on the job less than a month, was issued a verbal admonishment.
mlive.comMichigan’s run game benefitting from J.J. McCarthy’s improved speed
ANN ARBOR – One of J.J. McCarthy’s first plays from scrimmage Saturday against Colorado State brought Michigan fans out of their seats. Perhaps if that was high school McCarthy, a highly touted five-star recruit, he wouldn’t have had the speed to outrun a college defensive back, but the work he has put in with Michigan’s training staff paid off Saturday. “I don’t know when it happened with (strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert) but he got my speed down to 4.5s, 4.4s. In order to get fast, you gotta run fast, and we’ve been doing a lot of that here.”Following Saturday’s 51-7 win, head coach Jim Harbaugh lauded McCarthy’s “electric” ability. “Coach Weiss, coming from the (Baltimore) Ravens and being with Lamar (Jackson), he has so much wisdom and knowledge about that quarterback run game,” McCarthy said.
mlive.comMichigan football depth chart: Who will emerge as third RB?
ANN ARBOR – Last August, Michigan running backs coach Mike Hart told reporters that it was going to take more than two running backs to get through the 2021 season. Michigan once again has a clear one-two tandem heading into 2022 with Edwards and Corum, but how the depth chart shapes up behind them remains to be seen. Isaiah Gash, Leon Franklin, pretty darn good, too. “A guy that really popped the day before yesterday, big scrimmage, was a guy by the name of Isaiah Gash, who just did a tremendous job,” Harbaugh said. “He’s a talented guy,” Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss said on Aug. 7.
mlive.comMichigan’s new play-callers seek to execute Jim Harbaugh’s ‘vision’
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — When it comes to offensive play-calling this fall for Michigan football, Jim Harbaugh has defaulted back to having multiple cooks in the kitchen. While Sherrone Moore has maintained his role as offensive line coach and co-coordinator, quarterbacks coach Matt Weiss has been promoted to co-coordinator himself and both assistants have been handed the keys to the playbook. Many of the same offensive players are back this year, including the quarterbacks, running back Blake Corum and four starters along the offensive line, setting the stage for a battle in the trenches. mlive.comLinebacker Kalel Mullings adding a physical element to Michigan RB room
ANN ARBOR – Last season, Hassan Haskins became the first Michigan player to eclipse 1,300 rushing yards since his position coach, Mike Hart, did so in 2007. Although Haskins is now with the Tennessee Titans, Michigan still has plenty of explosiveness returning in the backfield with junior Blake Corum and sophomore Donovan Edwards. Linebacker Kalel Mullings split time between defense and running back in the spring and was one of the top standouts in April’s scrimmage, rushing for 36 yards on four carries, including a 21-yard scamper down the sideline. Although Mullings was recruited as a linebacker, he also played running back at Milton Academy and rushed for 371 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior. We’re not saying that Kalel is going to be Hassan, we’re just asking him to be Kalel.
mlive.comWeek into camp, Jim Harbaugh says Michigan ‘further ahead’ than last year
Michigan’s only about a week into preseason camp, a collection of practice days designed to get the most out of players. But four practices in this time around, Harbaugh finds his team in a more advanced stage. “We’re further ahead than we were last year at this time,” Harbaugh said this week on the “In the Trenches” podcast with Michigan radio analyst Jon Jansen. “The defense didn’t change — (and) same with the offense,” Harbaugh said. “Coach Moore and coach Weiss are co-coordinators.
mlive.comMichigan QB coach Matt Weiss adjusting to life on recruiting trail
ANN ARBOR -- Matt Weiss held numerous different coaching responsibilities in his 12 years with the Baltimore Ravens from 2009-20. Since joining Jim Harbaugh’s staff at Michigan before the 2021 season, Weiss has added recruiting duties to his plate – a task that has been an eye-opening experience for the Wolverines’ quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator. “Recruiting is really important because we all understand that the quality of your players is the biggest input into your program,” Weiss told reporters Sunday inside Schembechler Hall. But I think I’m figuring out and learning fast.”Quarterback recruiting has saturated Wolverines’ message boards this offseason as Michigan missed out on two elite in-state quarterbacks. ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jim Harbaugh’s assistant coaches at Michigan all received new contracts with pay raises in recent months, making Sherrone Moore and first-year defensive coordinator Jesse Minter the highest-paid on staff. ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Jim Harbaugh has preached collaboration among his coaches for years now at Michigan, and the 2022 season is going to be no different on offense. This year, Moore — who earned the co-coordinator title last year, but didn’t call any plays — will tag team everything with Weiss, Michigan’s quarterbacks coach, to help revamp the Wolverines’ offense. “Just because we know each other,” said Moore, Michigan’s offensive line coach, told reporters last Wednesday. “When you watch the tape, the first thing that you’d say is, ‘Wow, that is a great offense,’” Weiss said. “We set records and for Michigan, it was a historically great offense.
mlive.comMichigan hopeful to have QB J.J. McCarthy throwing by fall camp
As Michigan’s football team nears the half-way mark of spring practice, there’s a growing belief that McCarthy — limited with an undisclosed injury to his right throwing shoulder — will be full-go by the time fall camp kicks off in early August. He’s rehabbing, he’s doing what he’s supposed to do,” quarterbacks coach and recently promoted co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss told reporters on Wednesday. “Which is the smart thing to do, to make sure a small problem doesn’t become a big problem,” Weiss said. “He’s in team drills — full team drills at times. However, Weiss said, there’s a belief that McCarthy could be back in a full-time capacity, throwing and all, by the start of fall camp.
