Kalamazoo forms Police Athletic League, commits $1M for youth development
The Kalamazoo Police Athletic League (PAL) will be a coordinated approach between the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety and the Parks and Recreation Department. A youth program advocate has been hired to oversee the PAL league and will interface directly with KYDNet and Kalamazoo Public Schools, city officials said. “The PAL league would be for any youth in Kalamazoo to play here within the PAL league, and also play against different PAL leagues in West Michigan,” McVerry said. The Kalamazoo PAL plans to expand with other sports that could include baseball, soccer and basketball. The subcommittee has members from the Kalamazoo City Commission, city staff, Kalamazoo Youth Development Network, Kalamazoo Public Schools and The Kalamazoo Promise.

The tournament in the city’s Northside neighborhood is part of a lead up to the fifth year of Police Athletic League youth football season, a news release said. The basketball tournament is for kids between 8 and 16 years old. Medals will be given to the winners of the different age categories, KDPS Public Information Officer Ryan Bridges said. Southwest will run from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.People can register day-of for the tournament, contrary to the social media flyer, Bridges said.

DETROIT The corner of Michigan Avenue and Trumbull is sacred ground to Detroit residents. Concerts hosted at the Corner Ballpark are drawing complaints. According to the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL), they have operated within the agreement it has with the city. PAL said the ballpark is used to host diverse events that provide much-needed funding for its sports programs. There were some residents who didnt want to go on camera but did say they had no complaints about the concerts.

DETROIT It was a welcome sight in Corktown throughout the day with the Police Athletic League kicking off a new season at the Corner Ballpark. The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has forced a lot of changes to keep the players and staff safe. It was a tight game between the Southwest Tigers and Southwest Astecs on Monday night. The number one thing for Detroit PAL is to do it safely, director of athletics David Greenwood said. You cant see it right now but Im actually smiling its great to see kids playing in an athletic way.
