GRAND RAPIDS, MI-- Students from East Grand Rapids took over DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids for prom on Saturday evening, May 7. The theme of the prom was “Monte Cristo Casino” and over 315 tickets were sold, according to school officials. ANN ARBOR – In a recent update, Ann Arbor Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeanice Kerr Swift announced that the district is moving forward with plans to hold in-person graduation ceremonies this year. Last year, all ceremonies were canceled due to concerns over the then-new coronavirus pandemic and each high school organized drive-thru events and virtual ceremonies for its seniors. Swift confirmed that Huron, Pioneer and Skyline high schools will have traditional graduation ceremonies outdoors at Eastern Michigan University’s stadium. Tentative dates for the three ceremonies:Huron High School: Wednesday, June 2 at 6:30 p.m.Pioneer High School: Thursday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m.Skyline High School: Monday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m.Community and Pathways high schools are also planning to hold outdoor commencement ceremonies. In addition to the graduation update, Swift announced that all Class of 2021 students will receive a celebratory yard sign like last year.
Spike in COVID-19 cases linked to grad parties in Oakland County
SOUTH LYON, Mich. – There has been a spike in coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in parts of Oakland County. The health department said the rising number of cases in the South Lyon area can be traced to summer parties -- specifically graduation and prom parties. There have been 50 new cases in South Lyon alone, which is a rate of 15 cases per 10,000 people. In Lyon Township, there are 16, which is almost 23 cases per 10,000. Several of them tested positive for COVID-19 and that started a domino effect.
With prom canceled, parents make sure seniors still get prom photos

It’s something definitely happening.”But with a pandemic, a lot of things that were guarantees for Senior Isabella Tomlinson became unknowns. If I got extremely upset, I thought that would be selfish.”Tomlinson is taking all of this in stride, but her parents knew missing out on senior prom was a big deal. “I really wanted to wear my princess dress that I always wanted to wear and it was perfect,” she said.

California teen crowned prom king from hospital bed Cody Smith may have been unable to attend his prom, but that didn't prevent the 17-year-old from being named prom king. Smith recently learned that his germ cell cancer had spread to his brain, forcing him to be hospitalized during his prom. His principal and classmates hoped that honoring him would help lift his spirits.
