New US Space Command headquarters not coming to Michigan
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Michigan was not selected as a finalist for the new U.S. Space Command headquarters, according to Sterling Heights City Manager Mark Vanderpool. “On behalf of General Rogers, County Executive Mark Hackel, Mayor Michael Taylor, City Council and myself, we thank you for your support,” Vanderpool said in a statement. “There is no question Michigan is a major player in aerospace with impressive talent and assets statewide. Sterling Heights’ U.S. Space Command nomination was chosen for further evaluation. The nomination request was signed by Hackel and Michigan Gov.
Macomb County makes pitch for new US Space Command HQ
Leaders in Macomb County are making a sales pitch to bring a new U.S. Space Command headquarters to southeastern Michigan. “If you look at work force, we have an incredibly talented workforce across southeast Michigan that can contribute. If you come to a place like Michigan, it is wide open. It’s a fresh pool of talent and incredibly deep and experienced pool of talent.”Major General Rogers also said southeastern Michigan’s strong industrial base and top-notch academic institutions could be appealing factors in the final decision. Reward offered for information after lasers pointed at helicopters from Selfridge in Macomb County
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A reward for information is offered after lasers were pointed at two Selfridge-based helicopters while they were flying in St. Clair County and Macomb County. The crews of both helicopters safely landed at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Coast Guard Investigative Service’s CGIS TIPS app, available free on Apple’s app store and Google Play. Officials are also seeking information about a laser that was pointed at a Coast Guard helicopter in Chesterfield Township on March 17. Officials noted that if a Coast Guard helicopter is on a rescue mission and a member of the aircrew is compromised by lasers, the mission must be aborted.
Selfridge Air National Guard Base will not get F-35 planes
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County will not receive F-35 planes that President Donald Trump said he was considering sending there. Wisconsin will receive the planes. Macomb County has been trying to get F-35s to the base for years. A campaign was launched in 2017, but the federal government decided to send the planes somewhere else. Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice S. Miller released a statement about the decision to not select Selfridge:“We are disappointed at the news that Selfridge Air National Guard Base was not selected as an F-35 base.
