Plans for $27M power plant dropped by Grand Haven Board of Light and Power

GRAND HAVEN, MI – Plans for a $27 million power plant in Grand Haven have been dropped by the Board of Light and Power, which cited community opposition as the reason. The Grand Haven City Council is expected to approve that notice of intent when it meets Monday, Sept. 20. The plant was the main topic of debate when Grand Haven voters in August trimmed five candidates for the board to four. Voters also will select a mayor and two Grand Haven City Council members in November. The Grand Haven City Council would have had to sign off on the bonds to finance the peaking plant.

PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ found at site of Grand Haven’s former power plant

GRAND HAVEN, MI – PFAS compounds, toxic “forever chemicals,” have been discovered at the site of the former Sims power plant in Grand Haven. The site has multiple contaminants, with PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) the latest to be discovered on the city’s Harbor Island. They were discovered during testing for compounds not related to coal ash, which was produced by the plant and buried on site. The Sims plant stopped producing electricity in February 2020 and since then the BLP has purchased power from other producers through the Michigan Public Power Agency. Bonds also would pay for more than $5 million in Sims plant demolition costs, $6 million in substation and metering improvements and $1 million in snowmelt equipment.

$50M bond sale for new power plant in Grand Haven gets initial OK

GRAND HAVEN, MI – The sale of up to $50 million in bonds to fund a new power plant and the demolition and cleanup of the former Sims plant was approved Thursday by the Grand Haven Board of Light and Power (BLP). The bond sale must be approved by the Grand Haven City Council, which is expected to discuss it on Monday, July 19. They also would pay for $27.75 million in costs related to the construction of the new plant. A large turnout from that group prompted the board’s June 18 meeting to be moved from the BLP offices on Eaton Drive to the Grand Haven Community Center. Excess heat from the Sims plant previously was used for snowmelt.
