Ninth annual ‘Occupy The Corner’ took place on Detroit’s east side
Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield held her ninth annual “Occupy The Corner” event as hundreds gathered Friday evening at Coleman Young Playfield on the city’s east side for a day of fun and special giveaways. Hundreds of families are going home with a free bike Friday (June 24) night, but the event’s purpose goes beyond that.
Residents on Detroits east side protest homeless center
DETROIT Some residents on Detroits east side came together to protest a homeless shelter in their community. They said that all you have to do is look around and see whats been done to the community because of the local resource for the homeless. No more trash in our streets, no more garbage out in the street, Reverend Aaron McCarthy said. Community members said that Team Wellness Center, a shelter and safe haven for the homeless, is hurting their community. Local 4 reached out to Team Wellness Center for comment.

Heat wave: Cooling centers open in Metro Detroit

Most of the cooling centers will offer water. Team Wellness Center has an overnight program which hosts more than 100 homeless individuals every night at the East location. People who have nowhere to go when the cooling centers close for the evening are welcome to stay overnight. Here's a list of cooling centers that opened earlier this month in Wayne County.
