Michigan proposal recount ends with few changed votes, many failed challenges
Election Integrity Force, a conservative activist group that has promoted debunked conspiracies of a stolen 2020 election, requested the recount. The recount was “to investigate violations of law,” EIF lawyer Daniel Hartman said Wednesday, but also for “trying to improve the system.”EIF presented to canvassers 119 unresolved challenges from the recount. mlive.comThis difference allowed Michigan’s proposal recount. Should the law change?
Michigan’s election law has different requirements for recounts of candidate races and ballot proposals. Candidates must prove their fraud allegations are in good faith, but people challenging proposals don’t have to. Canvassers alleged this recount was in bad faith, considering the number of ‘Yes’ votes being examined aren’t enough to change the results. But he also acknowledged to canvassers the recount is to “scrutinize” Michigan’s election process, not overturn the proposals. The recount of ballots in 43 counties continues through next Friday, when Genesee and Van Buren counties conduct their recounts.
mlive.comMichigan board certifies 2022 election as ex-candidates spread false claims
LANSING, MI — After a heated and momentarily chaotic meeting, a bipartisan Michigan board unanimously certified the state’s midterm election results. Michigan’s post-election atmosphere had not been as turbulent as 2020 until Monday, as losing candidates spread conspiracy theories to the Board of State Canvassers and testified — with no evidence — to widespread election fraud. Michigan law gives the canvassers a routine role of approving election results certified by the 83 counties. Canvassers voted 4-0 to certify the election results Monday. “That is not what the evidence says in any of those documents.”Police escort a man out of a Michigan Board of State Canvassers meeting in Lansing, Mich., on Nov. 28, 2022.
mlive.comPromote the Vote asks Michigan Supreme Court to approve ballot proposal
Promote the Vote 2022, a proposed constitutional amendment to expand Michigan voting rights and access, is asking the state Supreme Court to overrule the state panel that voted to keep it off the November ballot. But the four-member Board of State Canvassers on Wednesday deadlocked, 2-2, on whether to accept the bureau’s recommendation that PTV go on the ballot. Michigan’s seven-member Supreme Court has four Democrats and three Republicans, giving hope to Prop 2 proponents that justices will overturn canvassers’ decision. “The ‘challengers’ have made frivolous arguments to block this proposal,” Khalilah Spencer, Promote the Vote 2022 president, said in a statement Thursday. mlive.comBoard deadlocks on Michigan voting rights proposal; court fight likely
LANSING, MI – A ballot proposal to expand Michigan voting rights and access will have to wait to go on the November ballot after the state’s top election board Wednesday deadlocked on whether to approve it. Promote the Vote 2022 would expand voting rights and access in multiple ways if passed, building on top of a successful 2018 campaign to legalize no-excuse absentee voting in Michigan. It followed more than four hours of public discussion and debate between lawyers and board members. Because canvassers did not certify PTV, which they declared Proposal 2 in case it is eventually approved, it will have be ordered on the ballot by a court. mlive.comMichigan voters will see term limits, financial disclosure proposal on November ballot
DELTA TOWNSHIP, MI – Michigan voters will see on their ballots this November a proposal to change lawmaker term limits and require financial disclosures for the highest state officials, after Michigan’s top election board approved the official wording. It would also replace current term limits for lawmakers with a 12-year total limit in any combination of the House or Senate. Lawmakers, in a bipartisan supermajority, greenlighted the proposal in May after working with supporters group Voters for Transparency and Term Limits. Keith Allard, with opposition group Term Limits Defense Fund, argued the term limits section in the 100-word summary should come before the financial disclosure section. Steve Liedel, a lawyer for Voters for Transparency and Term Limits, proposed some small changes to the summary before canvassers voted, like swapping where it says the proposal will “change” term limits to “reduce” term limits.

All 83 county canvasser boards certified their results, with Wayne County being the last to certify on Tuesday.
