Gaudreau to Columbus tops busy summer of NHL player movement

Johnny Gaudreau leaving Calgary for Columbus headlined a busy offseason of player movement around the NHL.

Contenders re-sign key players at start of NHL free agency

The Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche have brought back defenseman Josh Manson with a four-year deal worth $18 million.

Pavelski scores 2 as Stars take 2-1 series lead over Flames

Joe Pavelski scored twice and got the game-winner on the first power-play goal in the series for Dallas as the Stars beat the Calgary Flames 4-2 to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round Western Conference playoff series.

Steve Yzerman: No surprises, no big deals were in works for Red Wings

On Monday, he sent defenseman Nick Leddy to St. Louis for bottom-six center Oskar Sundqvist, defenseman Jake Walman and a 2023 second-round pick. “I’m really not. “He was playing behind some pretty good players in St. Louis,” Yzerman said. “For what’s it worth, we’re gotten rave reviews on his character and his popularity in the locker room in St. Louis. “They’re good players, good people, they like playing here and they’ve played very well for us,” Yzerman said.

Red Wings trade Vladislav Namestnikov to Dallas for pick

The Detroit Red Wings traded forward Vladislav Namestnikov to the Dallas Stars for a fourth-round pick today, just prior to the deadline. Namestnikov, 29, has 13 goals and 25 points in 60 games, improving from last season’s disappointing performance (eight goals, 17 points in 53 games). The Red Wings signed Namestnikov to a two-year contract with a $2 million cap hit prior to last season. He is the nephew of former Red Wing Slava Kozlov, grew up in metro Detroit and was excited for the opportunity to return home. More: Red Wings get second-round pick, two players for Nick Leddy

Could slide prompt Red Wings to be aggressive at trade deadline?

The Detroit Red Wings head into Monday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline mired in their worst slump of the season. “We’ve got guys that got to play better,” coach Jeff Blashill said after Saturday’s 4-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken. But he has played well, and the Red Wings value his defensive ability and leadership, so they might be inclined to re-sign him rather than trade him. The Red Wings also have ample cap space they can use to facilitate trades involving teams that are tight against the cap. “We got to find our footing and get through the trade deadline and get better here.”More:If Red Wings opt for bigger deal, three who could be in playTyler Bertuzzi dismisses trade talk, committed to Red Wings

Gauging trade value of Red Wings’ potential rentals

The Red Wings have nine selections in the 2022 draft, including an extra second-rounder (from Washington) and addition third-round picks (from Colorado and Vegas). Nick Leddy: The Red Wings acquired this veteran defenseman in the offseason likely with the intention of moving him at the deadline. He has cooled off recently (no goals, one assist in nine games), but should still land the Red Wings a mid-round pick. However, it’s more likely the Red Wings will re-sign him for another season. Red Wings weigh options with Joe Veleno: Detroit or Grand Rapids

Joe Veleno has been a fixture in the Detroit Red Wings’ lineup since mid-December, playing in the past 22 games. If Blashill opts to insert Rowney into the fourth-line center spot, between Givani Smith and Sam Gagner, the Red Wings might opt to keep Veleno in the AHL for now. Veleno, 22, has four goals and seven points in 35 games with Detroit, averaging 12:15 in ice time. However, if Veleno stays in Grand Rapids he’ll log more ice time in all situations, which could further aid his development. “Makes good reads in chaos, which to be a better defensive team you need that,” Blashill said.

Red Wings’ strong all-around effort results in rare win at Philly

The Detroit Red Wings returned from the All-Star break Wednesday and turned in a strong performance in a place where they have had little success the past quarter-century. Five Red Wings recorded multiple points in a 6-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center. The Red Wings improved to 21-21-6 while the Flyers fell to 15-23-8. Alex Nedeljkovic made 21 saves as the Red Wings outshot the Flyers 34-24, holding them to just five shots in the third period. The Red Wings never trailed.

5 questions Red Wings face after All-Star break

The Detroit Red Wings return Wednesday in Philadelphia, one of their five games rescheduled due to postponements caused by COVID-19. The Red Wings (20-21-6) have taken steps in each of the past two seasons during this lengthy rebuild. With 35 games remaining, here are five questions the Red Wings face the rest of the season:Will they make a playoff push? Dynamic rookies Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond give the Red Wings a good shot at their first Calder Trophy winner since goaltender Roger Crozier in 1965. Of course, they have had vastly different teams, which is why general manager Steve Yzerman has stuck with Blashill through some difficult seasons.

Red Wings fade in third period, losing to Leafs 7-4

The Toronto Maple Leafs scored five unanswered goals in the third period and defeated Detroit 7-4 at Little Caesars Arena. Dylan Larkin had two goals and an assist for the Red Wings (19-20-6), who also got goals from Vladislav Namestnikov and Tyler Bertuzzi. Vladislav Namestnikov hopes improvement leads to extended stay with Red Wings

DETROIT – After fulfilling a childhood dream by becoming a Detroit Red Wing in 2020, Vladislav Namestnikov has put himself in position to possibly extend his stay. “That’s part of the reason you feel confidence moving him onto a line that’s going to see lots of minutes. The Red Wings could move him for a draft pick by the March 21 deadline. Namestnikov grew up in metro Detroit watching the Red Wings and his uncle, former Detroit winger Slava Kozlov, hopes to stay beyond this season. Raymond was the Red Wings’ choice in the competition.

The slow-starting Detroit Red Wings didn’t have much going for 50 minutes Monday. Dylan Larkin tied the game late in regulation and then scored at 2:07 of overtime in a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Arena. The Red Wings (18-17-5) have won back-to-back games against the Sabres, sweeping the four-game season series. The Red Wings were on the penalty kill because of an unsuccessful coach’s challenge for goalie interference on Jeff Skinner’s goal that put Buffalo ahead 2-0 at 9:21. Red Wings failed to push back against Bruins’ physical play

The Boston Bruins responded well to the physicality, the Detroit Red Wings did not. Alex Nedeljkovic kept the Red Wings in the game until the third period, when Boston scored three times in a span of 4:41. It might have been different had the Red Wings not gone 0 for 4 on the power play, registering only four shots, through two periods. The Red Wings entered the game ranked 29th on the power play. The Red Wings (13-10-3) have been much better at home (9-3-2) than on the road (4-7-1), where they went a combined 1-6-1 during recent four-game swings. “We’ve given the opponent momentum through poor puck decisions, poor puck play, and at times not being good enough defensively. Red Wings mailbag: Expansion draft protection list seems straightforward

NHL teams have about a month to finalize their protection lists for the July 21 Seattle Kraken expansion draft. Up front, if the Red Wings leave Givani Smith unprotected, Seattle likely would take him. Petr Mrazek has had a couple of good seasons since leaving Detroit but it’s doubtful the Red Wings have any regrets about moving him. The Red Wings must be pleased with the picks they received for Tatar (first-, second- and third-rounder) and Athanasiou (two second-rounders).
