Michigan veteranโs Purple Heart medal found on side of road to be returned to family
ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Mich. โ A Purple Heart medal that was found on the side of the road in Marine City will be returned to the family of a World War II veteran. William Upton served in the United States Army Air Forces during WWII. The Purple Heart, other medals, ribbons and military memorabilia were discovered in a box. Uptonโs family was found when the medal was posted on Facebook by the St. Clair County Department of Veterans Affairs. His family will be picking up the items.

The oldest known U.S. veteran of WWII celebrated his 110th birthday surrounded by relics of his past. Lawrence Brooks of New Orleans celebrated the big milestone at the National WWII Museum with family, supporters, tons of birthday treats and even a serenade from a musical trio who performed war classics. "I have made it, and I'm glad to be here, Brooks told APTN. Some of them I want to remember, and some of them I don't want to remember, he recalled. I said, Daddy how long you think youre going to live? his daughter Vanessa Brooks joked.

(CNN) - Private first class William Edward Brandenburg was only 17 when he died fighting in the Pacific during WWII. Patricia Moore didn't know her Uncle William, but she certainly remembers her mother, Mae Black, talking about him all her life. For years, Moore says her mother called any veterans group she could find in hopes of trying to locate his remains. There are still 72,000 Americans soldiers from WWII who are unaccounted for, according to the Defense Department.
