Firefighter thrown onto freeway in crash involving fire truck
HIGHLAND PARK, MI – A firefighter was thrown into the air and onto a Michigan freeway when a vehicle struck a fire truck on Sunday evening, WDIV Detroit reports. The Highland Park Fire Department was working to extinguish a vehicle fire on Davidson Freeway near Third Avenue when a vehicle hit the fire truck at the scene, the report said. The firefighter who was thrown in the crash was transported to a local hospital but didn’t appear to have major injuries, the report said. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and then to a hospital by Michigan State Police. Once firefighters were on the scene, a firefighter fell through the floor, triggering what’s known as a mayday call, but was grabbed as he was falling and was all right, according to the Fire Department’s media office. He was “OK and back on the pipe,” meaning he went back to hosing down the fire, according to a department tweet.
