Metro Detroit weather: Shower chances rest of this week, but then summer really arrives

Showers possible into this weekend

DETROIT – Clouds started breaking up Wednesday, although some of us remained mostly cloudy due to moisture streaming in off of Lake Huron. Ironically, the northern Thumb, which is closest to Lake Huron, was mostly sunny as the cooler air off the lake kept things more stable than farther south, where it was a bit warmer.

Diminishing wind and drier air continuing to move in should break up some of the remaining clouds overnight, so some of us will be partly cloudy at the worst, while others become mostly clear. Lows should reach the upper 30s (3 to 4 degree Celsius), which means there could be a touch of frost in low spots.

Wednesday’s sunset is at 8:36 p.m., and Thursday’s sunrise is at 6:24 a.m.

Cinco de Mayo forecast

We’ll start our Cinco de Mayo on Thursday with some sunshine. Clouds will then increase, and we’ll be cloudy by the end of the afternoon, although I think rain will hold off during the afternoon hours. Highs in the low 60s (16 to 17 degree Celsius). East wind developing at 5-10 mph. Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Showers develop Thursday night as a slow-moving upper-level low pressure area approaches from the west. The computer models are having a tough time depicting the rain pattern associated with this low, as I’ll further elucidate below. Lows will be much milder than Wednesday night, only falling into the upper 40s (9 degree Celsius).

Friday

Friday could be either a steady rain most of the day, just occasional periods of rain, or almost no rain, depending on which model verifies. To give you an idea as to just how far apart the models are, the GFS model gives us almost no rain (just 0.02″) through Friday night, while the ECMWF gives us between 1-2 inches. Yes, they are that far apart.

Regardless of which model comes out on top, highs should be around 60 degrees (15 to 16 degree Celsius).

Showers are possible Friday night, with lows in the upper 40s (9 degree Celsius).

Weekend weather

Again, depending on which model handles this difficult pattern right, we’ll either have a dry day Saturday, or showers ending in the morning. Fortunately, I have a couple of days to get this pesky upper low into range of the higher-resolution models, so I should develop a better handle on things Thursday or Friday.

Highs Saturday will probably just make it only to 60 degrees (15 to 16 degree Celsius) once again.

However, Mother’s Day looks spectacular, and that’s how it should be! Expect lots of sunshine, with highs in the mid-60s (18 degree Celsius). What a day!

Ready for some summer?

Most of next week looks partly cloudy and dry, with highs warming into the mid-70s (24 degree Celsius) on Monday, and then near or above 80 degrees (27 to 28 degree Celsius) the rest of the week!

There’s the chance for a scattered mid-week shower, but those chances look pretty small right now.
