Memorial Day weekend begins wet, ends warm, dry in Metro Detroit

Highs in mid-60s Friday in Southeast Michigan

4Warn Weather – Thursday brought another day of cool air, but the quiet weather won’t last long.

After a dry and breezy Friday, rain is expected to overspread the region late Friday night, potentially making for a soggy start to Memorial Day weekend.

Temperatures Thursday night will fall into the lower 40s across the Thumb and northern suburbs, with upper 40s closer to Detroit and Monroe. A northeast breeze will continue overnight.

Skies will remain mostly cloudy, with partial clearing at times.

Friday brings another cool day by May standards, with highs topping out in the mid to upper 60s across Metro Detroit.

A steady east wind between 10 and 20 mph, with gusts over 25 mph at times, will add an extra chill near the lakeshore and during the morning commute.

While much of Friday stays dry, clouds will gradually increase through the evening.

Rain chances ramp up significantly after midnight Friday night as moisture surges northward into Michigan.

Showers are expected to become widespread toward daybreak Saturday, and periods of rain could continue through much of the day.

Some communities may pick up around half an inch, or locally more than an inch, of rainfall by the time the steadiest rain tapers off Saturday night.

Saturday looks to be the wettest day of the holiday weekend with highs only in the lower to mid-60s.

Gusty east winds and occasional rain may create a raw feel for anyone attending outdoor events, heading to graduation parties, or making early Memorial Day travel plans.

A few embedded thunderstorms are also possible, especially later Saturday into Sunday, although severe weather is not expected at this time.

The forecast improves heading into the second half of the holiday weekend.

Sunday turns milder with highs climbing into the 70s, though scattered showers or a thunderstorm may still pop up during the afternoon and evening.

It will not be all-day rain, but anyone with outdoor plans should keep an eye on the sky.

Memorial Day itself is shaping up to be ideal.

Current forecasts show a mix of sun and clouds on Monday, with highs near 80 degrees and noticeably more comfortable conditions for ceremonies, parades, cemetery visits, and travel home from Up North.

Warmth continues to build beyond the holiday, with temperatures returning to the lower 80s by mid next week.

After the recent stretches of severe storms and dramatic temperature swings across Southeast Michigan, this weekend’s weather story shifts toward soaking rain, cooler breezes, and eventually a much-needed return to summerlike warmth.
