Woman Maced, beaten outside Westland apartment after rejecting man's advances

Victim found lying unconscious in parking lot

WESTLAND, Mich. – A woman in her 20s was Maced and beaten outside a Westland apartment after she rejected a man's advances, police said.

Ingrid Pittman said her stepdaughter was beaten within an inch of her life Monday outside her own apartment in Westland. It happened as she got off her bus from community college.

"A guy was walking behind her when she got off the bus, I guess a little distance behind her," Pittman said. "He hollered out to her, 'Can you give me a hug?' She started walking faster, and he started walking faster behind her. She started to run."

Her stepdaughter almost made it to her apartment when a black vehicle pulled up, Pittman said.

"She said a black Jeep or truck pulled up on the side of her and three guys got out," Pittman said. "They were trying to get her in the vehicle, and with her kind of fighting back, they Maced her in the face, beat her up and left her on the ground."

The victim was found unconscious in the parking lot. She is now recovering and is too afraid to share her story.

Westland police said they're alarmed and are working the case as hard as they can. They said they need more information about the attack.

"The community knows what's going on, and once again, I want the guys to be caught," Pittman said.
