Detroit man charged in Woodward Avenue fatal shooting

Investigation by Detroit Police Department led to arrest of defendant on October 13

DETROIT – Detroit resident Jovin Morice Taylor, 38, has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 34-year-old Lance Sutherland and the assault of a 36-year-old man.

Both of the victims are from Detroit.

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, on Sept 29 at around 1:37 a.m. police officers were dispatched to a bar in the 6400 block of Woodward Avenue in Detroit for a reported shooting.

When officers arrived they found Sutherland on the ground in the parking lot with an apparent gunshot wound. Medics arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The shooting happened after a verbal altercation took place between Taylor and the 36-year-old man. When the altercation escalated Taylor fired a handgun and fatally shot Sutherland who was an innocent bystander who had no involvement in the altercation.

An investigation by the Detroit Police Department led to the arrest of Taylor on October 13.

Taylor has been charged with one count of first degree murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, felon in possession of a firearm and felony firearm second degree.

He was arraigned on October 16 in 36th District Court and returned to jail. His probable cause conference is for October 25 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Kenneth King.
