Oakland County honors first responders on scene amid Oxford High School shooting

Several deputies and dispatch specialists were also honored for their life-saving efforts during the shooting

OXFORD, Mich. – Nearly six months after the Oxford High School shooting, people who helped save lives that day were recognized.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard awarded first responders and young heroes for their bravery during the tragic event. It was during the sheriff’s office National Peace Officers Day Annual Awards Ceremony.

Heidi Allen was a student that Bouchard honored for helping barricade a door and keep her classmates safe during the shooting.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office describes Allen’s actions as courage. The Oxford High School student gave credit to her faith.

“It comes from God for sure,” said Allen. “I couldn’t have done it without God.”

Deputy Jason Louwaert was one of the first deputies to respond during the shoot and was also honored during the ceremony.

“Nobody likes running into that type of situation is going we all know we were doing the right thing,” said Louwaert.

He accepted his bravery award and said, “It was uncomfortable because I am part of such a huge team.”

Several deputies and dispatch specialists were also honored for their life-saving efforts during the shooting.

During the award ceremony Wednesday, more than 400 people from across the county were awarded for heroic acts or deeds throughout the year.
