Woman files federal lawsuit against Detroit, DPD, for killing her dog while chasing someone else

Tiffany Lindsay’s federal lawsuit says police had no warrant or reason to enter her fenced-in yard, violating her civil rights

DETROIT – A Detroit dog owner has taken legal action against the city and a police officer who she says shot and killed her dog while chasing someone else across her property.

Local 4 did this story in September when police chased someone who ran through a woman’s yard. When her dog came out of the dog house, they shot him and dumped the body in a neighbor’s garbage can.

The incident occurred on Glastonbury off of 8 Mile Road on Sept. 6, 2022. Tiffany Lindsay told Local 4 she would be the City of Detroit’s worst nightmare, and now she has filed a federal lawsuit.

“I am going to be the worst nightmare,” said Lindsay.

Lindsay showed Local 4 that police were chasing people from an incident up the street. Officers went into her backyard and encountered her dog, Jack, who was shot and dumped his body in the trash can next door.

“You were trying to hide it,” Lindsay said. “You were trying to hide it. That’s Detroit.”

Her federal lawsuit says police had no warrant or reason to enter her fenced-in yard, violating her civil rights.

“They didn’t knock on my door and say nothing,” Lindsay said. “He was my best friend, my protector. He was an emotional support dog.”

The Detroit Police Department said they would not comment on a pending case.
