HAZEL PARK, Mich. – A junior high teacher in Hazel Park has been sentenced to 14 days in jail for leaving a bomb threat on a desk right in front of a security camera.

Paul Thomas Jacobs, 40, of Livonia, was arrested after someone found a threatening note on Feb. 2, 2023. Officials said the note threatened a bombing at Hazel Park Junior High School.

Jacobs, who had been teaching at the school for two years, was arrested after police searched the building. He confessed to the crime after security footage showed him placing the note on a desk for someone to find, according to authorities.

No bomb was found, but district officials canceled after-school activities as a precaution.

Jacobs was charged with a misdemeanor count of violent threat against a school. He was sentenced Tuesday, May 23, to 14 days in jail and 24 months of probation.
