Very specific similarities in three notes used during bank robberies around Metro Detroit helped police link the same man to all three.

Glenn Donnell Pack, 23, is accused of robbing a trio of banks in Metro Detroit: a PNC Bank in Hamtramck, a Chase Bank in Harper Woods, and a PNC Bank in Hazel Park.

In the days following each of those bank robberies, Pack posted pictures on social media that showed several large bills. In one of the photos, he was wearing pants and shoes that matched those from two of the robberies, officials said.

Hamtramck bank robbery

The first bank robbery happened at 2:47 p.m. Dec. 19, 2023, at the PNC Bank at 11300 Joseph Campau Avenue in Hamtramck.

The criminal complaint says the robber “entered the bank and waited in line, as a customer would do.”

When the teller asked what he needed, the man passed the following note, officials said.

“I am robbing your window,” it says. “I demand $2,900. Count the bills no stacks no pulling alarm until I exit bank. No GPS money. Follow federal bank policy then nobody gets hurt. Remain silent. Don’t be ignorant.”

The teller did what was asked, handing over 29 $100 bills, the criminal complaint says.

The robber left the bank on foot and was seen outside a nearby store about two minutes away, police said. Video showed him changing his sweatshirt and throwing it in a dumpster.

Hamtramck police later went to the dumpster and picked up the sweatshirt for evidence.

After removing his sweatshirt, the man walked into the store without his mask on to buy a drink, and cameras captured video of his face.

Investigators used footage from the store to identify the suspected bank robber as Pack, they said.

Pack got into a pickup truck when he left the store. Surveillance cameras captured Pack apparently asking the driver, “Uber?”

The robbery note was sent to the Michigan State Police lab for forensic analysis, and a fingerprint on the note matched the one in the system for Pack.

Harper Woods bank robbery

Less than two weeks later, the Chase Bank at 20675 Vernier Road in Harper Woods was robbed. It happened around 1:15 p.m. Jan. 2.

Officials said Pack once again walked into the bank and stood in line. When his turn came up, he handed the teller a note.

“I am robbing you,” it said. “Remain calm. Keep your hands in my view. No panic button. Do not be extra. No dye pack no bait bills no GPS. Count from stack of clean bills. Hurry you have 45 seconds. Count $9,000 all hundreds. Count fast I am serious.”

The teller handed Pack about $3,500, the criminal complaint says.

Investigators said they noticed the note was very similar to the first, from the handwriting, the style, and the grammatical errors.

“The word ‘robbing’ appears to be extremely similar, down to the improper capitalization of certain letters,” the complaint reads.

Surveillance cameras appear to show Pack leaving the bank.

He walked to a residential area east of the bank, where a worker at another business saw him change clothes, according to officials.

Police searched the area and found a blue USA tennis bag, a pair of size 15 black Nike shoes, a blue and yellow winter hat, a yellow and white surgical mask, and a blue and gray zip-up hooded sweatshirt.

Hazel Park bank robbery

The final bank robbery was reported at 9:38 a.m. Jan. 12 at the PNC Bank at 22711 South Chrysler Drive in Hazel Park. This was 10 days after the second robbery.

Officials said Pack stood in line like an ordinary customer before providing another note to the teller. Many of the mannerisms in this note match those from the first two, the criminal complaint says.

“I am robbing you,” it said. “Follow my instructions. No alarm no GPS stacks no marked bills. Count from stack of cash. No dye packs. All 100s, $9,000 nine thousand. Hurry you have 30 seconds or else.”

Surveillance footage showed the robber matched the description of the person from the other two bank robberies, according to investigators.

Pack left the bank with $4,460, police said. The total loss from the three robberies was about $10,500.

Social media posts

Investigators said they searched for social media accounts linked to Pack and found his public Facebook page.

On Dec. 24, 2023 -- five days after the Hamtramck robbery -- Pack posted a picture of himself “fanning” several bills. In the photo, Pack appeared to be wearing the same sweat pants as the Harper Woods robber and the same shoes as the Hamtramck robber, the criminal complaint says.

Officials found another post on the Facebook account from Jan. 5, 2024 -- three days after the Harper Woods robbery. The photo showed several $100 and $50 bills lying on a surface. Investigators said the bills were upside down, so the serial numbers were not visible.

On Jan. 16, 2024 -- four days after the Hazel Park robbery -- another Facebook photo showed several bills lying face-down on a surface.

The first two of those three Facebook photos were included in the criminal complaint:

The criminal complaint concludes there’s probable cause that Pack robbed the banks.
