BERKLEY, Mich. – A major gas leak that prompted evacuations and a large public safety response in Berkley has been mitigated, and officials say there is no longer a risk to the public.

The Berkley Department of Public Safety announced on Friday (July 3) that the leak has been contained and the evacuation order for homes in the affected area has been lifted.

Residents may now safely return to their homes.

The incident occurred on Dorothea Street between Mortenson and Ferris, where emergency crews responded to a significant gas leak.

As a precaution, officials evacuated nearby homes while crews worked to contain the leak and urged the public to avoid the area to allow first responders to operate safely.

Earlier in the response, with residents preparing for Independence Day celebrations, officials warned against using fireworks in or near the affected area, as any ignition source could create an extremely dangerous situation.

No injuries were reported.

Officials have not released additional information about what caused the gas leak.
