BERKLEY, Mich. – A major gas leak prompted evacuations and a public safety response in Berkley.
Update: Berkley gas leak contained, evacuation lifted after emergency response
Per the Berkley Department of Public Safety’s Facebook page, the incident is taking place on Friday (July 3) on Dorothea Street between Mortenson and Ferris.
As a precaution, homes in the affected area are being evacuated while emergency crews work to contain the leak.
The Berkley Department of Public Safety is urging the public to avoid the area until further notice to allow first responders to safely manage the incident.
With everyone getting ready to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, officials also warned residents not to use fireworks in or near the affected area, saying any ignition source could create an extremely dangerous situation.
Residents are asked to stay clear of emergency personnel and follow all instructions from public safety officials.
No injuries were immediately reported, and officials have not released additional details about the cause of the leak.
Police said they will provide updates as more information becomes available.
