EASTPOINTE – A Detroit man believed to be harboring stolen plants led police on a chaotic chase through Eastpointe early Friday morning, running over an officer’s legs and losing much of the alleged stolen goods in the process.
Officers initiated a traffic stop with the suspect, who was hauling a trailer in a pickup truck, after receiving reports around 1:40 a.m. of an individual who had stolen plants from the English Gardens at 9 Mile and Kelly roads. But when police told the man he was under arrest for the alleged theft, he sped off, appearing to strike the officer flanking the driver’s side of the vehicle.

As police pursued the driver — identified as 37-year-old Jeremy Johnson — a tire blew out on the trailer, causing sparks to go flying as Johnson fled at a high rate of speed. As Johnson continued to drive erratically, the ramp door of the trailer busted open, launching a lawnmower and other contents into the roadway.
The pursuit came to an end in the area of 8 Mile and Mound roads in Warren, at which point police say Johnson fled on foot before being taken into custody.
Johnson was arraigned Friday afternoon and charged with second-degree fleeing and eluding, breaking and entering, obstructing or resisting a police officer and assault with a dangerous weapon.
His bond was set at $1 million.
