The Red Wings’ top defensive pairing of Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot has been intact since the start of training camp. “I think he’s probably fighting a little bit of confidence,” Lalonde said.

I prepared mentally for it before the season.”Hellberg, 31, joined the Red Wings Friday for the morning skate prior to the game against Arizona at Little Caesars Arena (8 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit). It was influenced by their familiarity with Hellberg, who signed with the Red Wings late last season following a five-year stint in the KHL and played the season finale at New Jersey, a 5-3 victory. “It’s not easy for her to be along on this journey but it’s great having her by my side, supporting us in all this stuff.”More: Better starts, five-on-five play the focus for Red Wings

One week ago, the Red Wings were mired in a four-game slide (0-2-2). “Someone asked me on the West Coast, what are you going to do, you’re 0-2-2. Yzerman indicated before camp that Edvinsson would need to play on at least one specialty unit to start in Detroit. Lalonde said there is no preference in carrying 14 forwards and seven defensemen or 13 forwards and eight defensemen.

mlive.comSeason finale means more to Red Wings than just draft lottery implications
The final two months of the season were disappointing, but the Detroit Red Wings can take some solace from winning their last game tonight in New Jersey (7 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit). It’s not much to celebrate but might send them into the offseason in a slightly better frame of mind. “I think it’s important to go out and play great hockey,” coach Jeff Blashill said. The Red Wings (72 points) would move up to seventh and have a 6.5 percent chance of winning the May 10 lottery if Ottawa (71 points) gains a point on them. The Red Wings would move down to ninth and have a 5 percent chance of winning the lottery if they gain two points on Buffalo (73 points).

Red Wings seek to avoid season series sweep by Senators
Contain Josh Norris and stay out of the penalty box are two of the keys for the Detroit Red Wings tonight as they face Ottawa at Little Caesars Arena (7:30, Bally Sports Detroit), looking to avoid being swept in the season series by the Senators. Ottawa won back-to-back games vs. Detroit April 1-3, both 5-2, in matchups between teams that have been eliminated from playoff contention. “In the first two we didn’t play great, but we could have won either game,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “I like our game better today than when we went into those games. The Red Wings, 2-0-1 in their past three, are stressing discipline after being shorthanded 16 times the past four games (they killed 15 penalties).
mlive.comRed Wings look to end season-long skid vs. surging Bruins
The Detroit Red Wings face a tough challenge tonight against the Boston Bruins as they try to stop two streaks (7:30, Bally Sports Detroit). The Red Wings (26-34-9) have lost six in a row (0-4-2), equaling their season-long skid from March 4-15 (0-5-1). They certainly exploit you from an offensive standpoint, but they’re very good defensively and they’re hard to create against. The Bruins won two of the first three meetings with the Red Wings, who needed a 41-save performance from Alex Nedeljkovic to prevail 2-1 at Boston on Nov. 30. Basically, it still comes down to you playing your game and playing it really good against any team.”More: Red Wings wonder why there is no joy in games
mlive.comRed Wings haven’t capitalized enough vs. second- and third-string goalies
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings have faced a backup or third-string goaltender in nearly half of their games, including two making their NHL debut. “We didn’t do a good enough job of it at all,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. The Red Wings went 0 for 5 on the power play and allowed a shorthanded goal. The Red Wings (26-33-9) continue a slide that began one month ago, when they were at .500 in points percentage. That prompted the Red Wings captain to retaliate by punching him, which resulted in a one-game suspension for Larkin.
mlive.comRed Wings fall to Senators and goalie making NHL debut
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings could do no right on special teams Friday, and they could not take advantage of a goaltender making his NHL debut. Mads Stogaard made 27 saves, Mathieu Joseph scored three goals in the third period as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Red Wings 5-2 at Little Caesars Arena. In the waning minutes, some in the crowd began chanting “Fire Blashill!” to express their displeasure with Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill. The Red Wings (26-33-9) are 2-9-3 in their past 14. The Red Wings began the third period with 33 seconds of a five-on-three power play.
mlive.comRested Red Wings ready for ‘angry’ Lightning
The Detroit Red Wings will be well-rested and the Tampa Bay Lightning quite agitated when the teams meet tonight at Amalie Arena (7 p.m., Bally Sports Detroit). The Red Wings (24-24-6) are coming off a 4-3 overtime victory over Carolina on Wednesday, looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since Feb. 9-12 against the Flyers. But Red Wings’ coach Jeff Blashill doesn’t believe being the rested team necessarily is an advantage in this case. Prior to that, the Lightning had won 17 in a row at home against the Red Wings, including the playoffs. … I just would hate to put a real date on it and lock myself into that.”The Red Wings will need to clear a roster spot before activating Vrana.

A lot of young talent will be on display tonight when the Detroit Red Wings face the Anaheim Ducks at Little Caesars Arena (7:30, Bally Sports Detroit). That includes the three potential finalists for the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie. Seider (four goals, 29 points) leads all rookies in assists (25), power-play points (12) and average ice time (22:35). “I think he’s had that in him the whole time,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. mlive.comRoad-weary Red Wings look to get re-energized vs. well-rested Jets
The Winnipeg Jets will be well-rested but not as battle-tested as the Detroit Red Wings when they visit Little Caesars Arena tonight (7:30, Bally Sports Detroit). The Red Wings, meanwhile, are coming off a three-game California trip crammed into four days after last Thursday’s game in Anaheim was moved to this past Sunday. The Red Wings are winless in three (0-1-2) but have been much better at home (12-5-2) than on the road (4-11-3). Alex Nedeljkovic is expected to start in goal for the Red Wings. The Pistons fell to the Bulls 133-87, just one night after erasing a 22-point deficit to beat the Utah Jazz. Like the Pistons (9-31) on Monday, the Bulls did much of their damage in the third quarter. The Pistons struggled to get things going and the Bulls continued to stretch their lead well into the fourth quarter. Then Matt Thomas knocked down a three to extend the Bulls’ lead to 40 with 6:45 remaining in the game.

Two years later, Fabbri is eager to help the Detroit Red Wings rebuild after signing a three-year, $12 million extension on Monday. The Red Wings needed offense and believed Fabbri, the 21st overall pick in 2014, could provide it with opportunity. The question you ask yourself is can the player help you win long-term? “Everybody in this league plays hard but he’s played extraordinary hard, and I think that’s who he is as a person,” Blashill said. He can separate himself with that competitiveness and that’s what he’s got to do.”This is the second contract Fabbri has signed with the Red Wings.

But if PETA got its way, the bizarre description for bullpen would become the norm. “Bullpen” refers to the area of a “bull’s pen” where bulls are held before they are slaughtered,” PETA wrote. Switching to “arm barn” would be a home run for baseball fans, players, and animals.”PETA proposes replacing “bullpen” with arm barn.”“Let’s liberate the language we use in baseball,” the statement concludes. Of course, MLB is very unlikely to change a term that’s been in baseball for more than 100 years. However, “arm barn” is a pretty hilarious term.
