Construction on Grosse Ile bridge creates commuting problems, delays for residents
GROSSE ILE, Mich. โ Progress is being made in Grosse Ile where construction crews are working around the clock on a bridge that was closed by Wayne County. Crews started to repair the bridge on Grosse Ile using heavy duty equipment. Beverly Watts, director of the Wayne County Department of Public Services said she had no choice. The closure forced people living on Grosse Ile to use the toll bridge as the only way to enter and exit the area. WAYNE COUNTY, Mich. Drivers have been lined up for miles outside the Grosse Ile toll bridge because the other bridge has been shut down since Wednesday for maintenance and repairs. I work 10 hours a day and then I drive three hours home.The heavy traffic stretched for miles Friday night. A recent inspection on the main Grosse Ile bridge showed it needs major repairs. Wayne County was proactive. Watts said officials expect an updated inspection of the bridge that will let them know how to move forward with construction.
