Former Detroit Red Wings player arrested in airport for public intoxication
Former Detroit Red Wings hockey player Bobby Ryan was arrested at the Nashville International Airport on Monday for public intoxication, according to various reports. He also allegedly took items from an airport store without paying for them. Back in 2020, Ryan told CBC and members of the press that he was doing “very, very well” in his recovery. Currently an unrestricted free agent, Ryan played one season with the Red Wings in 2020-21, which was also his most recent NHL stint. He played just 33 games that season while scoring seven goals with seven assists.
mlive.comRed Wings keep Lucas Raymond for now, release Bobby Ryan from tryout
DETROIT – Lucas Raymond impressed enough during the preseason to apparently earn not only a place on the Detroit Red Wings’ opening-night roster, but also a spot on the top line. But we’ll have to continue to watch it and see.”Raymond’s performance, in part, also influenced the Red Wings’ decision to release 34-year-old right wing Bobby Ryan from his tryout. Did other guys’ play have a factor. When guys play great, they find their way onto the team. When they’re playing good and other guys are playing good, then factors come into play like waiver-eligibility.”
mlive.comInjuries might impact Red Wings’ roster decisions
The Detroit Red Wings played their eighth and final exhibition game in 11 days Saturday afternoon, missing several regulars due to injuries. It’s good for evaluation purposes.”The Red Wings (4-4 in preseason) open the regular season Thursday against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning at Little Caesars Arena. We’ll make (roster) decisions when we have to make decisions and not before that.”The Red Wings might be inclined to sign veteran right wing Bobby Ryan, in camp on a tryout. The Red Wings have several young players pushing for job, mostly notably former first-round picks Joe Veleno and Lucas Raymond, who are waiver-exempt, and Taro Hirose, who is not waiver-exempt. Bobby Ryan has played a lot, Veleno has played a lot.
mlive.comRoster decisions at forward loom for Red Wings as preseason concludes
As much as coaches and general managers like to say the best player will earn the roster spot in any preseason competition, they know that is not the case. With two goals and two assists in five preseason games, Ryan has showed no ill effects from triceps surgery that ended his 2021 season. Joe Veleno: He has played well in the preseason, after a solid five-game stint with the Red Wings at the end of last season. The Red Wings, after protecting Smith in the expansion draft, aren’t likely to risk losing him on waivers before the season, so he will probably make the team. He has flourished in Grand Rapids the past two seasons (55 points in 64 games) and the Red Wings would like to keep him in the organization.
mlive.comRed Wings’ power play breaks out in preseason loss to Blackhawks
DETROIT – If the preseason is any indication, the Detroit Red Wings might have discovered a formula for success to a power play that has struggled badly in recent years. The Red Wings scored four power-play goals Monday in a 6-4 exhibition loss to the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena. The club hired Alex Tanguay as an assistant coach in the offseason specifically to work with the forwards and find solutions for a power play that ranked second-to-last in the NHL last season. Detroit is 8 for 19 on the power play in five preseason games. Detroit regrouped in the second period and carried the play, outshooting the Blackhawks 17-9 and scoring on all three its man-advantage opportunities.

Lucas Raymond was the first to get a look in that spot on Thursday, and he didn’t look out of place, scoring in his first career preseason game and adding an assist as the Detroit Red Wings defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-2 at Little Caesars Arena. Luke Witkowski and Jon Martin also scored for the Red Wings (2-0). The Red Wings scored four goals in the second period, including three in a span of 3:12 early in the frame to take the lead. The Red Wings peppered Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen with 18 shots in the first period, including seven on their first power play, but couldn’t convert. The Red Wings host Columbus on Saturday (7 p.m.).
mlive.comRed Wings’ Jakub Vrana out four months due to shoulder surgery
A team that struggled for offense last season has suffered a big blow even before its first game of 2021-22, as Detroit Red Wings forward Jakub Vrana will be out a minimum of four months due to a shoulder surgery. Coach Jeff Blashill said Thursday that Vrana had been bothered by shoulder pain in the offseason but was hoping to play through it. Vrana, 25, made a huge impact after joining the Red Wings following a trade-deadline day trade with Washington for Anthony Mantha, recoding eight goals and 11 points in 11 games with his new team. The Red Wings signed Vrana to a three-year extension in the offseason worth $5.25 million per season. Vrana had been slated to play on a line with Pius Suter at center and Robby Fabbri on the left sing.

Bobby Ryan’s pursuit of a contract with the Detroit Red Wings begins in earnest tonight in the preseason opener against the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center (8:30, joined in progress on NHL Network, WWJ-AM 950). The remaining forwards slated to play are Taro Hirose, Dominik Shine, Kyle Criscuolo, Kirill Tyutyayev and Dennis Yan. The Red Wings’ home preseason opener is Thursday against the Buffalo Sabres. Coach Jeff Blashill explained on Tuesday how the staff determines how many games each player will play. “The first two games we’re going to try to not have anybody play back-to-back unless something unforeseen happens.
mlive.comBobby Ryan looks to broaden game to earn Red Wings contract
Bobby Ryan realized the need to approach this training camp and preseason differently in order to extend his NHL career, at least with the Detroit Red Wings. “Just be a little more patient in those areas for me because your leash isn’t the same as a top-six player right now. Let’s make sure we’re giving Bobby a good look. Among the veteran right shooters, only Gagner is slated for the power play, an area Ryan can help. “I think my body of work speaks for itself, however limited it might have been last year, and a couple of injuries that kind of derailed the season,” Ryan said.
mlive.comBobby Ryan signs professional tryout deal with Red Wings
Bobby Ryan, after undergoing triceps surgery, said near the end of last season that he still has some hockey left in him at age 34. He hopes to prove that to the Detroit Red Wings over the next couple of weeks after signing a professional tryout contract with the team. The Red Wings could use another right-shooting forward with some offensive ability, someone who can play on the power play. He cooled off, however, and finished with 14 points (seven goals, seven assists) in 33 games. He underwent triceps surgery in April, when Ryan said doctors discovered he had a deteriorated tendon that was torn off the bone.

Filppula, the longtime Detroit Red Wings forward, signed a one-year contract with Geneve-Servette of the Swiss Hockey League on Tuesday. Filppula, 37, returned to the Red Wings in 2019, after five seasons with Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and the New York Islanders. “When we approached Valtteri, he was immediately interested in the project,” Geneve-Servette general manager Marc Gautschi said in a statement. Drafted 95th overall by Detroit in 2002, he played in 591 games with the Red Wings (112 goals, 287 points). Filppula and Darren Helm, who signed a one-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche, were the last remaining Red Wings from the 2008 Stanley Cup championship team.
mlive.comFree agent forwards: Red Wings could use a couple of right-handed shooters
Between players under contract, their own restricted free agents and any prospects projected to earn roster spots in 2021-22, the Detroit Red Wings have no right-shooting forwards. The Red Wings also will explore the market, for right shooters and lefties. But that is also why the Red Wings have resisted trading him and want him back. He probably would cost more than the Red Wings want to spend. Corey Perry, Montreal, 36 ($750,000): The Red Wings had interest in him two years ago when he signed with Dallas.
mlive.comBobby Ryan still has some hockey left after surgery, hopes it’s with Red Wings
DETROIT – Retirement briefly crossed Bobby Ryan’s mind as he prepared for triceps surgery. “There were a couple of days it was really hard after knowing I was going to get surgery and how long it was going to be,” Ryan said. Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman aggressively pursued Ryan after free agency began and quicky signed him to a one-year, $1 million contract on Oct. 9. Ryan, 34, played only 33 games (seven goals, seven assists) but enjoyed his time in Detroit. I hope it’s Detroit,” Ryan said.
mlive.comRed Wings’ Steve Yzerman will decide on UFAs, Jeff Blashill after season
They still have some UFAs they would like to re-sign, but general manager Steve Yzerman said those decisions won’t be made until after the season. “I’m not sure that I’ve talked to all of our pending UFAs, but my plan right now is to wait,” Yzerman said. Yzerman said he and coach Jeff Blashill “will sit down very quickly after the season and discuss” the future. Yzerman has previously said that Blashill would be evaluated more on how players have developed under his watch. If that doesn’t happen and we can bring him back, we’ll certainly do everything we can to bring him back.”More: Steve Yzerman says return for Anthony Mantha too good to pass up
mlive.comRed Wings’ trading chip Bobby Ryan done for season due to injury
DETROIT – Bobby Ryan was one of the Detroit Red Wings’ top scoring threats, a team leader and positive influence in the dressing room, and a key trade chip at the deadline. That’s more a decision based on surgery and some other things.”The Red Wings were hoping to move Ryan, 34, to a playoff-contending club for a draft pick by Monday’s trade deadline. I think he’s been a good example guy and he’s a guy who can score goals. Ryan indicated last month that he would consider re-signing with the Red Wings in the summer even if traded at the deadline. mlive.comHow injuries could affect Red Wings’ trade deadline activity
Bobby Ryan tops the Detroit Red Wings’ lost list of potential trade candidates, for multiple reasons. But an upper-body injury could impact the Red Wings’ ability to move him by Monday’s 3 p.m. deadline. mlive.comRed Wings’ Jeff Blashill on why this could be a quiet trade deadline
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings at one time appeared to be poised for a potential windfall of draft picks at the trade deadline, given their many impending unrestricted free agents. So, Monday’s trade deadline could be fairly quiet for the Red Wings and largely uneventful throughout the NHL. “It doesn’t feel like there will be much action this year,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. The Red Wings surely will look to re-sign Glendening, who turns 32 on April 28. However, Blashill, for one, will not be surprised if it is quiet on the trade front the next few days.
mlive.comWhich Red Wings free agents will be traded? Who will stay?
The Detroit Red Wings have 17 selections in the next two drafts, but general manager Steve Yzerman wants more. Additional picks mean more chances to acquire future impact NHL players, which the Red Wings desperately need in the midst of a long and painful rebuild. The Red Wings have many players, including 11 on the NHL roster, slated to become UFAs this summer. Some would not draw interest, and the Red Wings would be hesitant to move others. There is little doubt the Red Wings will look to re-sign him, and the Grand Rapids native surely wants to stay.

The Red Wings have lost six consecutive road games. “It’s as bad as we’ve played defensively in a while,” Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. “It took us too long to get into this game tonight,” Red Wings center Dylan Larkin said. Red Wings hope ‘hardest practice’ helps right ship
DETROIT – A dreadful performance Thursday by the Detroit Red Wings led to what Bobby Ryan called the hardest practice of the year on Friday. After a 7-1 loss at Nashville, Ryan said the team focused on battle drills and compete level. “We didn’t have that (Thursday); we put it into play (Friday),” Ryan said. “We were embarrassed, so we should have had an intense practice and I’d be shocked if we didn’t start the game intense,” coach Jeff Blashill said. Bobby Ryan, making his Red Wings debut after missing the season opener with an injury, also scored. On the eve of his Detroit Red Wings debut, Bobby Ryan was feeling the kind of nervous energy he experienced leading into his first NHL game 13 years ago. “I talked to Vladdy (Namestnikov) today and he said he hadn’t recalled being that nervous in a while,” Ryan said. The Detroit Red Wings could have as many as seven new players in the lineup Thursday when they open the season. The Detroit Red Wings played the first of three camp scrimmages Tuesday at Little Caesars Arena. On the blue line, Marc Staal will be relied for basically only defense, but he also scored a goal. Forward Turner Elson scored a goal in the first period but left in the second period after an apparent knee injury.
mlive.comBobby Ryan impressed by Red Wings’ positivity, ‘little jerk’ Dylan Larkin’s compete
Bobby Ryan knew little about his new team before signing with the Detroit Red Wings in October. “I had a very small relationship with Larks through roller hockey, but I knew his skill level, I just didn’t know the compete level,” Ryan said. Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill isn’t surprised by how Larkin reached out to Ryan. The Red Wings signed Ryan, 33, to a one-year, $1 million contact to help bolster their offense and give them a right-shooting top-six forward. “They’re impressive, they come to work every day with the intention to get better and be competitive,” Ryan said.
mlive.comAnthony Mantha: Red Wings ‘stronger, bigger, faster,’ ready for high-tempo camp
The Detroit Red Wings front office, coaching staff and fans will be happy to hear players maximized their 9½-month offseason. Anthony Mantha likes what he has seen during three months of informal skating sessions with most of his teammates. “We had so much time on our hands that if you weren’t stronger and faster you kind of wasted time this summer.”The Red Wings open training camp Friday at the Belfor Training Center inside Little Caesars Arena. I think practices are going to be intense,” Mantha, who took a couple of power-skating lessons in the offseason, said. Mantha wants to forget about the team’s disastrous 2019-20 season, when the Red Wings finished 23 points behind the next-worst team.

It might not feel like it, but a lot has happened in Red Wings world recently. The Red Wings are not looking for anything long-term in net. The Red Wings acquired Staal and a second-round draft pick from the New York Rangers for future considerations. I think Bertuzzi has been a consistently good player on a very consistently bad Red Wings team. I am always skeptical of every draft pick until we see him in the lineup, in a Red Wings sweater and playing well.
