CARL MARLINGA

James, Marlinga to battle for 10th U.S. House district seat in November

Republican candidate John James will go on to square off against former Macomb County prosecutor Carl Marlinga, his Democratic contender, this November after both secured victory in their respective primaries early Wednesday morning. In addition to being the former Macomb County prosecutor, Marlinga also previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney and a judge on both the 16th Circuit and Probate courts. RELATED: Abortion rights, economy top issues for candidates in Michigan’s 10th congressional raceMarlinga’s matchup against James is expected to be an uphill battle for the former judge, with the district anticipated to lean in James’ favor. Most Oakland County voters were drawn out of Michigan’s new 10th district during the redistricting process, which combined areas of Rochester and Rochester Hills with southern Macomb County, creating a district that leans Republican. James, meanwhile, said he was led to enter the race because he feels the nation needs “ethical leaders” to hold the Biden administration accountable.

John James announces run for Michigan’s 10th Congressional District

Monday (Jan. 31) night, John James announced that he is running for Michigan’s newly drawn 10th Congressional District. The 10th Congressional District has no incumbent, and both Democrats and Republicans view it as winnable. There are still fights over the district maps, but James’s entry into the race would seem to shift the dynamic if this district holds its shape.

Defendant in Mount Clemens courtroom for traffic incident charged with larceny after phone stolen

While awaiting his turn in front of the judge, the defendant noticed an unattended cellular phone on the bench in front of him, police said. MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. - An Eastpointe man is being charged with larceny, a four-year felony, after he was accused of theft while in court on unrelated charges. On June 26, the defendant was in the 16th Judicial Circuit Court, awaiting sentencing in front of Judge Carl Marlinga on charges stemming from a 2017 traffic stop incident. The defendant allegedly sat down near the phone on the bench and placed his hat over the phone, according to police. The courtroom deputy was able to pull the courtroom video feed, which provided a view of the courtroom and the phone being taken.
