Trump, social media, right-wing news stir up antifa scares
It's a scene that has unfolded in many other cities and small towns this year, the product of fear and conflict stoked by bogus posts on social media, right-wing news outlets and even some of the nation's most powerful leaders. A man suspected of fatally shooting a Trump supporter after a pro-Trump caravan in Portland, Oregon, last month had described himself in a social media post as โ100% ANTIFA." Theyโre trying to blame all this stuff on antifa, and Iโm like, โWho exactly is antifa? Adam Klein, an associate professor of communication studies at Pace University, analyzed social media posts by far-right extremists and antifascist activists leading up to the Charlottesville rally three years ago. โYou donโt get the sense online that there is an organization as much as there are some prominent (social media) accounts associated with antifa,โ he said.
Charlottesville suit seeks to link online talk to violence
(AP Photo/Steve Helber, File)A lawsuit that could go trial next year cites online chats to argue that the white-nationalist violence that erupted in Charlottesville, Virginia, during the summer of 2017 was part of a far-right conspiracy. A counterprotester was run down and killed at the rally by a neo-Nazi. The lawsuit was brought mostly by other counterdemonstrators. It was filed against more than two dozen individuals and entities and seeks unspecified damages. The plaintiffs are trying to tie online hate speech in the weeks before the rally to the real-world violence that broke out.
Democrats' wins could help bring down Confederate statues
Previous attempts to do so were quickly dispatched in the Republican-controlled General Assembly, in votes largely along party lines. Hudson said she plans to reintroduce legislation her predecessor, David Toscano, sponsored, giving cities and counties the ability to remove Confederate monuments. Richmond's City Council has also twice rejected a resolution asking the General Assembly for the authority to decide the statues' fate. Earnest, with the Sons of Confederate Veterans, said allowing the removal of Confederate monuments could open the floodgates. "Now that the Democrats have retaken the General Assembly, the pressure should be on Gov.

Virginia's basketball coach turns down big raise after championship title
You have to wonder if the Virginia head basketball coach has ever viewed the 1990s Tom Cruise flick, famous for its "show me the money" catchphrase. Bennett, who led the Virginia men's basketball team to its first national title earlier this year, declined what the university described as a "substantial" raise. Instead the coach asked that financial investments be made to improve the basketball program he's run for a decade, and other sports under the school's athletic program. "This just does not happen in our industry," said Virginia athletic director Carla Williams, who was tasked with making revisions to Bennett's contract. Instead of taking the big raise, Bennett got another year tacked onto his current deal, which now runs for seven years.

The complaint called the men "among the most violent individuals" at the Charlottesville rally.
