Genesee County takes keys to downtown Flint tower. Mott Foundation grants $10M toward purchase

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The county has taken ownership of the old Citizens Bank tower in downtown Flint, and officials say they’ve received a commitment of $10 million to help pay for the purchase and millions of dollars more in expected renovations. The county paid UM $8.5 million for the 10-story building located next to The Huntington National Bank building, which acquired First Merit Bank and the property previously. County officials have said they expect to spend an additional $20 million in renovations. County commissioners agreed to accept a purchase agreement for the 160,000-square-foot property on Dec. 2 following months of negotiations with UM. The county landscape has changed ... GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The county has agreed to purchase the north tower of the old Citizens Bank complex in Flint from the University of Michigan for $8.5 million, a move that will likely trigger a broader shakeup of downtown real estate. Commissioners agreed to accept a purchase agreement for the property after discussing the deal in a closed meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 1, following months of negotiations with UM, which bought the 160,000-square-foot structure in 2015 from FirstMerit Corp.

Bank robber armed with box-cutter arrested

STERLING HEIGHTS, MI – A man armed with a “box-cutter style knife” is in police custody after allegedly attempting to rob a bank in southeast Michigan. The would-be bank robbery occurred around 2:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at Citizens Bank on 14 Mile Road in Sterling Heights, according to a news release from the Sterling Heights Police Department. Police were alerted to the situation by a 911 caller who was inside the bank. The caller reported that the white male suspect was armed with a “box-cutter style knife” and was taking money from cashiers’ drawers, police said. Sterling Heights Police officers were on the scene within minutes of the call and took the suspect into custody, police said.

Police investigating Fifth Third Bank robbery in Chesterfield Township

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Police are investigating after a Fifth Third Bank in Chesterfield Township was robbed Wednesday at 2:35 p.m.Police said the robber fled the bank on foot with an unknown amount of cash. The Chesterfield Township Police Department used a K-9 unit to search the area for the suspect, but was not successful. The police department's detective bureau and the FBI are investigating this robbery and a previous bank robbery that occurred in Chesterfield Township at a Citizens Bank on Oct. 2. Police are asking for the public assistance in identifying a suspected Roseville bank thief. Police believe the bank robber was the same person who stole cash from a Roseville bank last week. In the Roseville bank robbery, a man walked into a Citizens Bank around 4:15 p.m. Sept. 25 while speaking on a cellphone.
