DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings were officially eliminated from the playoffs earlier in the day, but they battled Saturday night like they were in the thick of the chase. The Red Wings (28-34-10) were coming off back-to-back wins and seeking their longest winning streak in more than four months. The Red Wings needed to kill 1:12 in Larkin’s late penalty to send the game to OT. Justin Danforth added to the lead at 13:34 before the Red Wings rallied. The Red Wings had two opportunities to clear the zone but didn’t execute.

NOVI, MI -- No criminal charges will be filed in the fireworks-related death of Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks at a Detroit-area home. Kivlenieks was at the Novi home of former Red Wings goalie Manny Legace, who was Kivlenieks’ goalie coach with Columbus, on July 4 when he died. His death has officially been ruled accidental and the case is now closed, according to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. This past season, he played two games for the Blue Jackets and eight for the American Hockey League’s Cleveland Monsters. A native of Riga, Latvia, Kivlenieks signed with the Blue Jackets as a free agent in May 2017 and played eight games for the club overall.

Jason Meier of the Novi Police told MLive. Meier said the investigation into the Fourth of July incident confirmed the death to be accidental. He played eight games with the Blue Jackets over the past two seasons, including the final two games of 2021 against the Red Wings.

The NHL said Friday that six Dallas Stars players and two staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 in a development that will push back the opener for the defending Western Conference champions by nearly a week. The Columbus Blue Jackets also held a number of players off the ice “out of abundance of caution” in another reminder that the pandemic will likely play havoc with the season opening next Wednesday. Dallas had been set to open the season Jan. 14 at Florida. The Dallas players and staff are self-isloating and the team’s training facilities were closed for the next several days amid contact tracing. The NHL has shortened the regular season to 56 games for each of its 31 teams, who will play only division foes and sometimes multiple times in a matter of a few days.

Red Wings make trade with Lightning to acquire F Adam Erne

The Red Wings will send over their 4th-round pick in next year's draft for Erne, who is a 24-year-old winger drafted by Tampa at 33rd overall in 2013. Erne played 65 games with the Bolts this past season, scoring 7 goals and 13 assists. This appears to be a move for more size up front for the Red Wings -- Erne is listed at 6-foot-1, 214 pounds. He found himself a more permanent spot in the lineup this past season.

Sonny Milano, formerly of the Columbus Blue Jackets, and A.J. Milano, 23, from Massapequa, New York, was drafted in the first round by the Blue Jackets in 2014 and played in eight games last season. In the 2017-2018 season, his personal best, Milano played in 55 games and tallied 14 goals and eight assists.
