Workers escaped deadly leak by going through nitrogen fog

Three workers remained hospitalized Friday in critical condition said Beth Downs, a spokesperson for Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Workers poured out of the plant Thursday morning after a liquid nitrogen line burst. Jameel Fareed told WSB-TV that he avoided walking into the cloud of liquid nitrogen. She said a number of workers told her they developed headaches, apparently from a lack of oxygen. She said workers told her there was a loud noise, and then some workers were rushed into a room at the plant before going outside, with a strong odor indicating the presence of nitrogen.

Poultry plants rely on refrigeration systems that can include liquid nitrogen. When leaked into the air, liquid nitrogen vaporizes into an odorless gas that’s capable of displacing oxygen. Mexico’s Foreign Relations Department said Thursday that two of the six people who died in a liquid nitrogen leak at a northeast Georgia poultry plant were Mexican citizens. A total of 12 food processing workers died in the workplace nationwide in 2019.

The Latest: No. 8 Florida reports no new COVID-19 positives

8 Florida reported no new COVID-19 positives in the past week, the first time since September the team’s coronavirus numbers have remained steady. The Southeastern Conference postponed two of Florida’s game following a COVID-19 outbreak that included coach Dan Mullen, at least two assistants and more than 30 players. The reserve/COVID-19 list is for a player who either tests positive for COVID-19 or who has been in close contact with an infected person. ___German soccer club Hertha Berlin says defender Jordan Torunarigha has tested positive for the coronavirus. Schalke said an unnamed player had also tested positive ahead of its German Cup game against Schweinfurt on Tuesday.

SEC fines Florida's Mullen $25K for role in brawl vs. Mizzou

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Southeastern Conference fined Florida coach Dan Mullen $25,000 on Monday for his role in a benches-clearing brawl against Missouri. Each of them will sit out the first half of Missouri’s next game, against No. Missouri linebacker Tre Williams was ejected for a flagrant unsportsmanlike conduct foul and will not be punished further. “There is no place in college football for the kind of incident that took place at halftime of the Missouri at Florida game Saturday night," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. Florida paused team activities Tuesday after learning it had 19 positives and about a dozen more quarantined because of contact tracing results.

White teen accused of plotting deadly attack on black church

Police say a 16-year-old white girl was motivated by racism when she allegedly plotted to attack a historically black church in Gainesville, Georgia. "Our investigation indicated the church was targeted by the juvenile because of the racial demographic of the church members," Parrish said in a statement. Pastor Michelle Rizer-Pool told the publication the girl visited her church last Wednesday, but no events were scheduled that night. White supremacist Dylann Roof fatally shot nine black church members during their Bible study lesson at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, during the summer of 2015. More recently, the white son of a sheriff's deputy was arrested in April and accused of setting fires that destroyed three black churches in rural Louisiana.
