Many of the schools are in Lenawee and Hillsdale counties, but a few are in Jackson County. JACKSON, MI – Due to inclement weather, LifeWays is closing in Jackson. LifeWays, 1200 N. West Ave., which serves Jackson and Hillsdale counties, is closing at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25. LifeWays Crisis Services staff will remain onsite, and the Crisis Residential Unit will remain fully operational. The closure is prompted by the Hillsdale County government offices also closing at 3 p.m. Per LifeWays policy, if either or both of its county government offices close, LifeWays will also close, officials said.

HILLSDALE -- In Wednesday’s semifinal of the Pat Paterson Holiday Classic, the Jonesville boys basketball team held Hillsdale scoreless for the first six minutes, 40 seconds of the game, held the Hornets to two points in the third quarter and eight in all in the second half, and won 39-23. Hillsdale’s defense did keep the Comets in check for stretches, but Jonesville was able to generate enough scoring to build an early lead and not let it slip away.

HILLSDALE -- Jonesville had a double digit lead nearly slip away Wednesday in the semifinals of the Pat Paterson Holiday Classic. But some clutch 3-point shooting from Julie Mach down the stretch, and some key defensive stops, led the Comets to a 51-46 win over Hillsdale. A basket by Gracen Hager early in the fourth quarter put the Comets up 45-32 before Rylee Miller responded with a jumper at the other end and Megan Rufenacht added a three-point play. Ra’Kell Brown then fed Rufenacht for a layup with 3:08 left in the game to cut the Comets’ lead to six, and Brown knocked down a pair of free throws moments later and Miller then adding a jumper to make it 45-43.

JACKSON, MI - School districts in Jackson and Hillsdale counties will remain closed for the third straight day on Wednesday, Nov. 16, as the Jackson County Intermediate School District works to ensure its system is safe after a ransomware incident shut it down. Oxley confirmed the ransomware attack is the reason the ISD proactively took systems offline in order to contain the incident. Despite no classes taking place again on Wednesday, some school districts including Jackson Public Schools have scheduled other activities like cheer and wrestling tryouts, while other sports will have tryouts later in the week. HILLSDALE, MI - Hillsdale College’s baseball facility has new names for the stadium and the field. The renovations of the baseball field are part of a larger improvement plan to Hillsdale College’s outdoor athletic facilities, officials said. The full improvement plan, available here, seeks donations by selling naming rights for components of the baseball complex. To raise funds, Hillsdale College will sell naming rights for $500,000 for the lights, as well as $250,000 each for the grandstands, concession stand, bullpens for both home and away teams, press box and the first base party deck. In an ongoing fight for influence in the Hillsdale County Republican Party, the Michigan GOP has picked a side as it pertains to next week’s state convention. The state party Friday chose to recognize delegates from an alternate convention of members who were disavowed by county party leadership, held last Thursday in a Hillsdale parking lot. A letter from the MIGOP states Hillsdale GOP leadership broke state party rules, while the parking lot convention followed proper procedures. All 26 from the parking lot convention were legitimate. Smith said Friday he and his side of the Hillsdale GOP divide have no plans of protesting the state convention and are instead focused on matters within the county party.

Jackson man charged in fatal head-on crash deemed competent to stand trial
JACKSON COUNTY, MI -- Court proceedings are moving forward in both Jackson and Hillsdale counties for a man charged in a fatal high-speed vehicle crash. At a June 28 review hearing, officials from the Center for Forensic Psychiatry found Sauber competent to stand trial, said Jackson County Prosecutor Jerry Jarzynka. At that time, deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a high-speed vehicle crash on Moscow Road north of Folks Road in Hanover Township in southern Jackson County. Kriebel, a passenger of the northbound vehicle, later died at the hospital due to her injuries, police said. White as the new head coach for track and field. White is a Hillsdale native and a graduate of Hillsdale High School. He has been an assistant coach for the Chargers’ cross country and track programs for more than a decade. White graduated from Hillsdale High School in 2005 where he was a three-time all-state cross country runner and took fourth in the 3200 at the Division 3 state track meet as a senior. He then ran at Eastern Michigan where he was part of eight MAC championships between cross country and track, and was the cross country team captain as a senior.

The Hillsdale boys track team scored 1,250 points to place fourth at the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association’s Division 3 team state championships on Saturday in Clare. The 4x100 relay team of Sam Willes, Hunter Wilson, Jordan Barnes and Jon Torres won with a time of 44.50. The Hornets’ 4x200 of Wilson, Barnes, Flannery and Torres took fourth. The 4x400 of Flannery, Torres, Boston Hite and Jonah Richards was third. Brice VanZant took second in the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles.

Scoring 107 points, the Hillsdale boys track team won the regional title on Friday, beating second-place Jonesville by six points. In the 4x200, Hillsdale won again with Torres setting a blistering pace on the anchor leg to secure a win for himself, Aidan Flannery, Barnes and Wilson in 1:33.10. Teams in the 4x200 relay race through the exchange zone between the second and third legs on Friday at the Hillsdale Regional. Hillsdale got a win in the 800 from Richards, who trailed Hanover-Horton’s Austin Brown most of the way before speeding past on the home stretch to win in 2:01.77. Hanover-Horton’s Graham Gumper won the 100 in 11.41, beating out the Hillsdale duo of Wilson and Torres who were second and third.

HILLSDALE --Onsted won the girls track regional at Hillsdale on Friday, beating the host Hornets by 40 points. Hillsdale got a high jump win from Rianna Vincent, clearing 5′2. Heading into the meet her season best was 5′4 with Manchester’s Morgan Lutton hitting 5′2 a few weeks ago. Though not a PR, Vincent still was able to hit 5′2 and was able to get through to state with the regional win, with Lutton finishing second. In the 1600, Lumen Christi finished first and second with Madison Osterberg winning in 5:08 and Faith Smith not far behind.

In East Jackson alone, you had Napoleon’s Emme Van Poppel tossing 34 feet, 11 inches to take first place, and the top spot in the leaderboard, while Titans freshman Mariah Kerley was second with a 33′8. GRASS LAKE -- One-and a-half points separated the Homer girls track team and reigning Division 3 state champion and host Grass Lake on Saturday at the 48th Warrior Invitational. Grass Lake took first in the 4x100 where Layne Terry, Makenna Horodeczny, Ruby Johnson and Grace Bullock finished in 55.69 seconds to beat Chelsea by more than four seconds. In the 1600, Osterberg took first in 5:24.57. The Titans’ Faith Smith won the 3200 in 11:35.9, more than two minutes ahead of Anika Bery of Greenhills who took second. Perkins also took second in shot put with a throw of 30′6 to finish two inches behind Chelsea’s Ava Woodard.

ANN ARBOR, MI -- Arts organizations in Hillsdale, Jackson, Livingston, Lenawee, Monroe and Washtenaw counties recently received mini-grants from Creative Washtenaw. Other awardees include $4,000 to APG Audio Visual Mentoring in Lenawee County, $3,400 to Heritage Association of Hillsdale County Michigan and $4,000 to the Hillsdale County School of the Arts. The funding is part of more than $20,000 awarded by Creative Washtenaw for its second round of Arts and Cultural Project mini-grants. Creative Washtenaw, a nonprofit meant to advocate for and support art, runs the program on behalf of the Michigan Arts and Cultural Council. Michigan GOP Senate Leader Mike Shirkey appears in a video posted on Feb. 3 by the “R.O.A.R. The video appears to show Shirkey meeting with Hillsdale County Republican Party officials, one day before the county voted to censure Shirkey. The reported video comes right after the New York Times published an article detailing Shirkey’s involvement with Michigan militias, who held armed protests at the Michigan Capitol last year over COVID-19 restrictions. For all these reasons, Mike Shirkey should be out.
Hillsdale man arrested after 8-hour police standoff in Northern Michigan
ANTRIM COUNTY, Mich. – A Hillsdale man has been arrested after an eight-hour standoff with police in Antrim County Thursday. According to report from WPBN, police received a complaint that a man, later identified as 42-year-old Kip Miller, was driving erratically in Emmet County and may have intentionally swerved into another vehicle. Investigators said four children were in the vehicle with Miller, who claimed that they were living out of his vehicle. A chase ensued through Emmet County into Antrim County. Miller is expected to face additional charges in Emmet County.
Hillsdale College to hold in-person graduation ceremony despite health concerns
HILLSDALE, Mich. – There is controversy surrounding a graduation ceremony at Hillsdale College. An in-person commencement is planned for this weekend, despite concerns from health officials. The local health department is worried about a potential coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The commencement is being held Saturday, despite warnings from the health department. “Concern is that folks will be in town that do not recognize that they have COVID-19 and are spreading it,” public health officer Rebecca Burns said.
Michigan woman left in agony due to metal grill brush bristle -- do you need to worry about this?
HILLSDALE, Mich. - Local 4 Consumer Investigator Hank Winchester scored grills around Metro Detroit to see if others had the same problem. He found loose bristles to be a common problem. When he ran a magnet through grills at a few homes in the area, the results were surprising. There are other brushes that don't use metal bristles. Help Me Hank used one simply to illustrate how many bristles can be found in a typical grill.
