Ohio State is back for the first time since winning the inaugural title in the CFP era. After the SEC champion Crimson Tide rolled past Notre Dame 31-14 in a Rose Bowl played deep in the heart of Texas, the No. 3 Buckeyes of the Big Ten beat Clemson 49-28 in the other CFP semifinal at the Sugar Bowl on Friday night. The Tigers were trying, like Alabama, to get to the title game for the fifth time in the seven seasons of the four-team playoff. Alabama was the top seed in the first four-team playoff, but Ohio State beat the Tide 42-35 in the semifinal Sugar Bowl.

Former University of Michigan football star Desmond Howard has tested positive for COVID-19, the ESPN “College Gameday” host announced on Wednesday. Howard, who won the Heisman Trophy as a Wolverine in 1991, said he tested positive on Wednesday and plans to participate in the “College Gameday” broadcast this weekend from a remote location. “Outside of those symptoms, I feel good,” Howard said. "But you have to take this very seriously because it’s a very tricky virus — extremely unpredictable and tricky virus. You have to continue to do all the things that you can to maintain your health even if you feel good.”
WMU lineman Mike Caliendo named ‘Academic Heisman’ semifinalist
Michigan-based players joining Caliendo on the list of semifinalists are Michigan punter Will Hart, Michigan State safety Dominique Long and Eastern Michigan tight end Thomas Odukoya. Heading into 2020, Caliendo is a preseason First Team All-MAC pick from college football analyst Phil Steele and a second team all-conference pick from Athlon Sports. Former WMU quarterback Jon Wassink was a finalist for the Campbell Trophy in 2019, and former signal caller Zach Terrell won the award in 2016. Other notable Campbell Trophy recipients include Peyton Manning (1997), Chad Pennington (1999), Tim Tebow (2009) and last year’s winner Justin Herbert. The National Football Foundation will announce 12-14 finalists in November, and each will receive a $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2020 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class.
